Bill for some reason I am now curious about this. I know you said you got a letter before you bought the pictures, had you given them your address on a run, or did the letter just appear in your mailbox. Was this on Lake St Clair?

Also, anyone can purchase software which has contact info from Coast Guard Documentation Records. The copter only needs to see the name/hailing port...enter that into the search, and up pops names and addresses. Lots of folks that finance their boats, have been required to federally document their vessels.

Donna - Yes it was on St. Clair. I believe they contacted me both times. One was pics that they took from the Belle Isle Pier when we were running up the river from Cedar Point. No helicopter, so it was cheaper. I didn't even know they were taken, I just got the letter from them and was curious what they were from.

I recall looking at their site a few years ago and it seemed like they only operated in a few locations - SE Michigan, South Florida, and maybe another east coast city.

So then they do have ways of getting your info, you don't have to sign up in advance. It's not a problem if they only send a letter, but if they start sending pictures that's a differnt story.

We get a ton of advertising from boat companies and marina's. One marina sent us a coupon for a free overnight slip and when I spoke to the girl and asked her how she got our name she said they bought MI boat registration lists and mailed info to people that had 40' boats and larger. So lots of companies use these lists. Sort of makes you nervous, nothing is private.

Moral of the story if you are on a boat with someone you are not supposed to be with, make sure you hide from the flying paparazzi :D

Maybe the thing to do is copyright/ trademark your boat or boat name then sue their azz off for infringement! What judge or jury wouldn't be mad about overpriced, unsolicited pics trying to be sold back to the owner? Anyone want to go to Disney, take a Mickey Mouse pic and then try to sell it to Disney? I will stick to the FPC pics even though a couple of guys felt they got ripped off at an event for $100. The best pics I have are from Stu or Richard. Chopper shots are priceless if you don't have access to one!
