End of Powerboating?
http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/syriana/hd/
what the movie trailer first. We are supposed to nearly run out of oil in about 10 years. This movie shows what it could be like when we get down to the wire. Gas prices at the pump $20.00!!!! Who would be able to fill up their boat every weekend or who would even have a boat. Hydrogen powered engines probably wont be powerful enough to be in high performance boats. Boat companies might be forced into going out of business... THIS WOULD BE REALLY BAD    lol |
Re: End of Powerboating?
Matt Damon really sucks so I didn't watch the trailer, but $20 a gallon would suck even more than MD.

Re: End of Powerboating?
i have seen that before , looks like a very cool movie, might have to go see that when it starts :D:

Re: End of Powerboating?
It's an interesting tale of science fiction, but The sky is not falling.
Amazingly, there is some very compelling evidence to the contrary, but no one hears about it. But just think what this "oil crisis" is doing for the purse strings for so many in the oil industry. Oil crises are good, right. Maybe, just maybe: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/ar...TICLE_ID=38645 http://321energy.com/editorials/bain...man083105.html |
Re: End of Powerboating?
In 1978 they were saying we'd run out in 10 years also...
Read Paul Zane Pilzer's book "Unlimited Wealth" it should put your mind at ease... |

Re: End of Powerboating?
We have enough oil shale in the rockies to meet our power needs for the next 500 years, not to mention the the tar sands in Canada, or the vast coal reserves here in the us, all of which could easily be turned into gasoline. All it takes is the initial capital investment for the plants to convert it - and as long as oil remains above $35 a barrel is it all economically feasable. Getting the tree-huggers to go along with it might be another matter. I'm sure they would love to see $20 a gallon gasoline.

Re: End of Powerboating?
i can't watch anything with matt damon in it anymore without dying after team america world police.... :D :evilb:
"my name is matt damon...." :D :evilb: |
Re: End of Powerboating?
There was a great article in the Wall Street Journal early this year pointing out the only reason oil is expensive is because it is actually cheap. No one will invest in recovery of tar sands or other "expensive" sources since at a moments notice the price of oil could drop to $5/bl (at which they still would make money) and put those investors on the trailer.
Now, doesn't the whole oil industry look like nothing but a scam to make a few rich people even richer??? -g |

Re: End of Powerboating?
Also there is enough oil to meet current and projected demand for the next 50 years in the U.S. contained in ANWR (arctic national wildlife refuge) in Alaska. Not to mention exploratory drilling leases could provide the US gov't with 2.3 billion dollars in the next year.

I'll fit mine with a sail before I quit boating. :)

Like everything else, oil is a finite resource, but unlike electricity and hydrogen is not renewable. We need a government program, together with private industry, to develop either a new fuel source or a new kind of engine that runs on renewable fuels. |

Re: End of Powerboating?
Whats good for the oil bidness is good for America. When the Oil Patch is good, the economy is good. Actually the very best example of trickle down economics. All Oil people like to spend money, every one from the Pres. down to the Roughneck. and Partyin' like no tomorrow as well.

Re: End of Powerboating?
What are the thoughts on ETHANOL? Made from corn, burns well and is easy to produce... From what I'm told it even has a higher octane rating than what can be acheived from reg. gas products.....
|
Re: End of Powerboating?
Ethanol,
By itself it has substantially less btu's (power) per gallon, potentially more power because it contains oxygen (more air flow), but you need more of it. Ethanol can improve the octane rating which is why some currently use it in premium fuels. If it weren't for subsidies, it wouldn't be economical to produce. Untill they find a better production methods, it currently takes almost a gallon gas to create an equal btu quantity of ethanol. |

P.S. The "petrolium geologists" to whom you refer, if indeed they exist outside of your imagination, should start looking for a new line of work, if that's the line they tote. |
Re: End of Powerboating?
Ethanol will also dry out rubber hoses, gaskets, etc.

As others have said above there's more oil to be had if the price per barrel is high enough to go do it. Also there's the TDP/TCP process which converts most anything with long chain carbon molecules in it to #2 oil. The present cost of this is said to be approx $80/barrel at the trial plants now in operation. My guess is that if you combine an electric generating station (to use it's wasted heat) with a TDP plant you lower the cost to something higher than today's cost but within reason. :woohoo: Given the recent price spikes in oil, I'm surprised the TDP thing hasn't gotten more press. I've posted a couple of links, you can Google for a lot more. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_depolymerization http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columni...2-kantor_x.htm |

Re: Like potato chips ...
to add to what he said , you can liquify coal and make sythetic oil out of it for $80/barrel. With the proper investment in large scale production of such you could lower that cost considerably.

I don't know where they came up with the $80 a barrell. I've heard over and over again that in large scale production they can do for less than $35. Also, the finished product is already refined so they could sell the resulting gas from it for around $1.50 a gallon. Now all we need is for the energy co's to pony up the billions in investment that it would take to build such plants - oh, and we'd still have to to something about the tree huggers. |

Re: End of Powerboating?
Former President Carter told us we would be OUT of oil world wide in the 90's "NOT".
They were wrong whenthey predicted they reamining sullpy in the 50's, the 60's, the 70's, the 80's and now they say that we mave more than the total of each decades predictions combined. Have you heard of the Tas Sands in Canada? Check this out, there is more oil up there then the Saudi's have! http://ffden-2.phys.uaf.edu/102sprin...ects/M.Sexton/ I'm not going to worry about it. |
ANWR and global warming
So the Earth is getting warmer is it. Sounds like a good thing ! If you read the March (?) issue of Scientific American there was a guy proposing that humans, starting thousands of years ago, via farming and agriculture, caused enough CO2 to be released to stop another impending ice age. Would I rather there be more water to boat in or an endless winter, watching the snow accumulate on the shrinkwrap ? Hmmm .... :D
Also from 2 years ago ... (talking about same theory) http://www.futurepundit.com/archives/001838.html |
Re: End of Powerboating?
When I worked in the Gulf of Mexico I was told that to be profitable in the ultra deepwater leases. Oil needed to be above 16 dollars per barrel. We are there. :)
