On the gas vs diesel question... I just bought a 2005 F-250 CC 4x4 with the V-10. The V-10 has 3 valve heads for 2005 and makes 450 lbs/ft of torque. I consistently get 11 mpg in mixed driving with a heavy foot; I can get 14 on the freeway if I stick to 65 or so.
As of right now, diesel is at least .50 more a gallon than unleaded around my house. Add in that the smoker is ~$5K more than the gas motor and you'd have to drive a lot of miles to make up the difference, even if you got 5 mpg more.
A well-maintained V-10 will go 100,000 miles easily. Don't get me wrong, if you're going to be regularly towing large loads, or put 250,000 miles on a truck, then of course go diesel. For me, the truck is a daily driver in Michigan, where it gets cold. I tow the boat 3-6 times per year, about 8500 lbs on the trailer. No cold weather hassles, $5K (plus interest on that money) cheaper, save half-a-buck per gallon, still have 450 lbs/ft of torque, gas just made more sense.

I just re-read the question - an F-350 and an F-550 are significantly different vehicles. If you need anything more than an F-350, I think diesel is really the only option. Once you're above a 1 ton, I'd consider it to be almost exclusively a work truck, not a personal vehicle. IIRC, the 550 has heavier wheels, brakes, axles, springs, etc - just the added mass of these components would justify the oil-burner, IMO.

for the record the truck is a 2nd vehicle, have a car from work as a daily driver. the truck is just used to pull the boat and for fun...I am having 2nd thoughts with fuel prices this way. but back in the summer if it was all about the diesel and gas being equal and the diesel's better millage.. how do you weigh it out over the long run???
