Re: Tips/Rules/Info on running in the ocean - So Cal area
I would strongly suggest having a cell phone and a VHF Marine radio with you. Make sure you know the Coast Guard (VHF channel 16) and get SeaTow (888-973-2869 or VHF channel 16) or their equivalent. If you run to Catalina, take the route(s) that the ferry takes, so if you ever have a problem, most likely the ferry will be by in 1 hour or so.

Most afternoons - do not linger too long in Avalon ( 3:00 PM ).
Or, if you launch ( and plan to retrieve ) out of Huntington, do not linger in Newport Beach ( God help you if you are in Laguna ). . . The ride home from Avalon is generally more gentle ( relatively speaking ), than the ride from Newport. Leaving for home after 3:00PM, from either Newport or Avalon makes a man out of a boy, makes a woman cry. Makes you beg to God for five more foot of hull. . . . you will be happy that you observed the VHF radio information above . . . you WILL, on 'future' trips, be obsessive about keeping your flares dry. . . |
