Tips/Rules/Info on running in the ocean - So Cal area

Went out for my first ocean run yesterday. Launched in Huntington Beach (end of Edinger). Anyways - I'm looking for general info / rules / tips / anything that would help a newbie keep from getting in trouble.

Examples:

-Is there a speed limit inside the Long Beach Breakwater? I've heard that on the coast side of the oil islands its limited but have no idea where to look for accurate info.

-Can you cruise through the port of LB / port of LA? How close can you get to ships before the coast guard / harbor patrol gets nervous? Not that I plan on getting close - I just don't want any LE to think I'm doing a USS Cole interpretation when I'm just trying to find the Yard House.

Again, any other tips/rules/info would be much appreciated. The ocean is definately different - but looks like it will be a blast. And a 10 minute tow can't be beat!

Thanks
Justin

Hey Justin, most of the speed limit zones are pretty well marked....come out on Nov 12th for a SCOPE lunch run to Catalina, I'm sure someone in the group will have a chart for you to look at.

What boat do you have? I am always looking for someone to run with. May go this weekend if the boat is back together! Are you in HB?

Clip your lanyard every time.
Learn what a "Trip, Stuff, and Hook" are from other people.
Raceboat driver arent made on the first trip out.
Those three should keep you safe for awhile.
Run with the SCOPE guys and ask as many questions as you can. Its better to learn from others. All the guys who have been in the club and know how to run well, will help you out. The others that act like they know it all and may not help out or give advise... are the poodles! See you on the water!

You can learn a lot running with the SCOPE guys. Better yet, try to catch a ride with one of them for some hands on instruction. Some guys require that you maintain a tighter grip on the grab handles (huh, Hugh :D ).

Hey Al. If the ocean was not small craft advisory, victory-at-sea conditions for the Channel Islands Run, we would have had a nice, level flight! Next time.

A 27' Schiada with twin small blocks. This weekend won't work and next weekend we're going to Havasu - but anytime after that I'm down! I'm off of Goldenwest & Warner.

Thanks for all the tips everyone. Much appreciated.

Right on brother from HB. Beach and Atlanta. Let's hook up in December. Going to Key West middle of the month. Stepping into a motorhome and camping in Morro Bay the minute I return from Florida for Thanksgiving.
