WHERE are the MAGNUMS
Who's got a 27' Magnum Sport or Starfire that they want to get rid of? Or is there a Magnum club or chat line around, somewhere, anywhere? I don't need one that runs, I just need a hull to re-do and re-power. Come on guys, help me, please!

Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS
3 on Boattrader.com - in the end you will spend what you can buy Magnumans for..if pristine is your goal. Life is short - spend your time on the water - unless you already have another boat.

Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS
Thanks for the info. I've looked at all of the MAG'S you've mentioned. They've been for sale for a long, long time. They're not what I'm looking for, or anybody else is looking for, for that matter, otherwise they would have been sold a long time ago. Their decks have either been modified or they are not SPORTS or STARFIRES. I don't want a 27' MALTESE, it looks like a cruiser. THERE'S A BIG difference. The fact of the matter is, I'm looking for a 27' MAGNUM, with a stock hull and deck that hasn't been altered. I don't care what engines or drives it has or wheather it has any at all. I just want a stock SPORT or STARFIRE hull and deck. That's the one that Arronow won all the races with, became famous for, and made a fortune building them too. All the other configurations look like **** and are worthless, even if they have the same hull bottom. By the way, YES I DO have another boat, actually TWO other boats. In the meantime, HAVE A NICE DAY!

Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS
the first two are malteese the third is sport..........m.m..........

Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS
FLYWITHME......I feel your pain.....Magnum 27 info and boats for sale are hard to find compared to other boats.
I talked to Magnum and they said they only built just over 400 27 hulls in over 30 years.....this includes Sports, Sedans, Starfires and Center Consoles. Out of the 400 or so hulls I figure only about 250 at the most were Sports. So.....you're talking about a fairly rare boat IMHO. When I found my '74 Sport recently I snapped it up as I knew I wouldn't find many like it. Good luck and when you do find something let me know.....I'm "compiling" a 27 Sport registry of sorts. When I collect about 100 boats I may actually put together a web site. Regards, Aaron |

Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS
I think Grumpy old men (the race boat) sold a couple of weeks ago. I talked to a guy who's friend bought it at a GREAT PRICE!! Go to the Magnum website and look under the brokerage page, there are many sports on there for sale.

Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS
Thanks for the lead, but that's not a Magnum. It's a lookalike. If it was built by MAGNUM, it is one of a kind. I'm 62, grew up with Magnums, met Don Arronow, and went to 188th st. a few times before he was shot. The stock 27' has a very definite profile, long and slim, with no break in the sides of the hull, like the one up for bids. That one even has a deeper waterline, I'd say about 4". Formulas have that shear line too on their older boats. And that's where Arronow started. His first boat company was FORMULA.

Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS
That boat on ebay is a 26 MONZA.The seller is nuts!

Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS
FLY ......
Pop over to the donzi.net and go into the 'other boats for sale' forum . There is a 27 ad that was placed in September of last year that has recently been brought back up to the top. As of a day or two ago it was still available. It will need a lot of work by the look of it , but it sounds like you know what you want and you want it BADLY ! :D |

Re: Magnum part 1
Thanks for the info. I've looked at all of the MAG'S you've mentioned. They've been for sale for a long, long time. They're not what I'm looking for, or anybody else is looking for, for that matter, otherwise they would have been sold a long time ago. Their decks have either been modified or they are not SPORTS or STARFIRES. Magnums or any other boat of this era stay on the market for a longe time due to the fact that there is an infintecimally small market for them. This is probly due to many reasons. 1. They are old and heavy. Most people in the market today want a newer lighter weight boat that they can get the maximum speed out of the engine/hull combination. 2. They have been raced and are beat to death. 3. They have been through many owners and have been neglected or not upgraded with the proper materials. 4. Someone has bought one with the intentions of restoration and didn't have a clue of what the actual cost invovled were going to be, These boats usally sit dismanteled an rot. 5. Financing is difficult for a boat of this era. I could go on and on......... My opinion is that you buy one of these boats for the design of the hull and a bit of nostalgia. Most of the money that I have put into mine is in the things that you don't really see, such as new beefed up transom, engines, transmissions, wiring, plumbing, upholstery, fasteners, replating etc. These are the costs that are always required for a boat of this era and most people do not want to be bothered with. As far as keeping the boat totally original that is of course left up to the individual. Personally, I don't believe these or any boat of this era is a national treasure. The parts that were available back in the 70's were nowhere near the sophistication that we have today and I also believe the aesthetic design was not paid too much thought. That being said, I also don't think that the boats should be totally bastardized. This is what my boat looked like when I first got it. http://www2.hotboat.com/image_center...nal_Magnum.jpg Paint was not great and the inlay in the front deck was peeling up. I spoke to Richie Powers, at that time he was still with Magnum, and asked him if they still had the pieces for the inlay or design drawings. They didn't and still do not. In actuality the inlay was a piece of laminate that was poorly done. So I decided to delete it. Since I do use the cabin on occasion :evilb: :D , i wanted to add some ventilation. These are the only changes I made to the deck http://www2.hotboat.com/image_center...ll_Head_On.jpg On my particular boat there was a modified hatch that I have seen on many Magnum Sports. Basically they are a raised box that is either painted or upholstered. At the first go around I just redid the upholstery. http://www2.hotboat.com/image_center..._Rear_View.jpg This always bothered me because it ruined the lines of the boat. So I decided to redesign the hatch that would follow the rear profile and not look like the hatch was an afterthought or just a necessity. http://www2.hotboat.com/image_center...ENahemow56.JPG http://www2.hotboat.com/image_center...t_Spechts2.JPG http://www2.hotboat.com/image_center...10DSC00089.JPG http://www2.hotboat.com/image_center...10DSC00090.JPG continued Magum pt 2 |
Magnum part 2
I even went so far as to have the original side vents design cast and made for the air intake scoops.
Original http://www2.hotboat.com/image_center...nahemow106.JPG New Cast Grills in scoops. http://www2.hotboat.com/image_center...10DSC00103.JPG I basically left the dash and controls alone since I like the style of this with the boat, althoughth the placement of the drive and tab trim is not as convenient as a Gaffrig control. http://www2.hotboat.com/image_center...10DSC00099.JPG That's the one that Arronow won all the races with, became famous for, and made a fortune building them too. All the other configurations look like **** and are worthless, even if they have the same hull bottom. So lighten up Francis. :D P.S. Aaron , You've got a great boat . I only wish that boat was available when I was looking for one. It would have made things much easier for me as it was in my own backyard. |
Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS

Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS
Magnum man i like what you did with the deck inlay,I could never understand the purpose of that inlay and always thought it distracted from the otherwise great looks of the sport.Definitely the nicest magnum out there!

I like the filled in deck inlay too.....Gene you did a really nice job on that boat......what are you going to get next?
FLYWITHME.....here is a pic of my 27 sport but if you go to the Magnum forum here at OSO there are a few posts about it also. Did you check out that project boat in Michigan?.....it looks like exactly what you are looking for. Aaron. |
Re: WHERE are the MAGNUMS
Aaron,
If and when it sells, I have a unrigged 30 Skater that I have my eye on. Most of the people that have inquired over the boat are tire kickers and dreamers though. I am in no real rush to sell the boat. I keep in great shape and I am always upgrading something on it. Although, I am running out of things to do. It usually only has about 30-40 hrs a season run time on it. Regards, Eugene |
