Re: Towing a 40ft boat
I gotta go with Byrdman on this one. You have the power to pull it, probably even the brakes, but you are missing 2 wheels in the back. It will eat your lunch if you are not equiped correctly, and you my friend are not equiped to go that far safely.
Enterprise rents dually diesel trucks that they will let you tow with. I rented one in KC. Surely Chi town has the something similar. |
Re: Towing a 40ft boat
Ford states Im rated to tow up to 12500. The dually is 15k.
My buddy tows his 17k lb 5th wheel 34ft camper with his f350 7.3 and single axle doing 80mph on the interstate with no problems, but he is kind of sick. I know a dually will be better, but i was going to add a true class V hitch to replace the stock ford one, get a heavier duty ball and mount rated for 20k, redo all the trailer brakes, and possible add a weight distributing kit(trailer has electric brakes). I know the local performance marina hauls big boats around with a diesel F350. I saw him pulling a 42ft and a 47ft Fountain with it. he says it tows nice. I guess Ill have to try a short trip with it first, and see how she handles |
Re: Towing a 40ft boat
Pulling it at 80 on the interstate isnt the problem....its stopping/keeping it straight at 25 when someone pulls in front of you.
I say dually. |
Re: Towing a 40ft boat
I have two trucks in my fleet for boats and one is a single wheel 3/4 ton dodge with a diesel. I use it to pull 40 ft skaters with no problem. You just have to remember what you are using and drive accordingly. Drive sanely and you will have no problem

Re: Towing a 40ft boat
Mild, If you have the JRC Express, that boat has to weigh over 10k. Thats a big and heavy, full cabin boat. You will be fine, just watch your speed.

If the trailer has electric brakes at all 6 wheels its a cake walk...If it has surge, make sure the tongue is greased up good. But don't listen to me I'm a moron too....I towed this to N.Y. and back twice  |

I've pulled the Z33 Donzi on a steel trailer at a weight over 13K# with no problems in my 2WD F250 diesel. Listen to those who know... check the trailer brakes, tires and bearings. Be sure you know your lengths around corners and keep both hands on the wheel during crosswinds. |
