I have extension boxes on my 386 Sonic with XR's. Powered by 575 SCi's and it eats the XR's at least once a year. I was told that I would have better luck with the drives without the boxes. From what I understand, the upgraded drives still use Mercs gears.

The Powerplay may not be as heavy as my Sonic but with that hp it won't take him long to realize that he made two mistakes. One extension boxes, the other XR drives.

Can you compare the handling, Hole shot, Cruising Speed, & top end with a 38 without extension boxes?

Sounds like a perfect case for Konrad's new Bravo replacement drive - good for 740 lbs-ft and the tranny is in the extension box.

I agree with the Konrad drives. I think they will break the difference from a bravo to a 6.

I disagree with extension boxes on a V Bottom for pleasure boating.

You need to be more specific on V-hull. Ventilated or non.

All boats I've seen with them have been Ventilated.

You are bound to know more about this than anyone posting here. I'm just wanting my friend to get the best setup on a boat he is very excited about.

My opinion would be no on my 37 AVH and yes on my straight Vees. However we've got apples and oranges with the AT and PP.

I will consult with Sullivan from Performance Marine this weekend on this. He's done all of the above including Pulse drives on the 38 PP.

My feelings are that the boxes confuse the center of gravity on the steps which would translate into ill handing.

No, I couldn't find anyone that has the same setup that I have without the boxes. It was suggested that I removed them after spending a lot of time and money taking the boxes off and having them powder coated. They were then put back on with a lot of 5200. Maybe when I have to pull the motors again I will consider it but for now they are staying on.

When these XR's break and I know they will, I'll try one of the beefed up XR's with Imco shorties. My X dimension is too low and that's not helping the drives.

Sonic thought it was a good idea to put the boxes on the boat. Straight hull, 650 hp, 32p labbed Bravo 1 props. Original power was 550 hp.
