Mercury Joins Arneson
Has anybondy put a 525 EFI and an Arneson SD together?
That's the package I want to re-power my 76 27' Magnum with (single). I have to buy the complete 525 package to keep the engine in the same location with the Mercury gearbox. Then, I take the gears out and replace them with the SD gears. I don't want the SD gears in a standoff box hanging off the transom. If anyones's done anything similar to this, please let me know, as I want to make sure I do it right (measure twice and cut once). Besides that, I could use some help on which outdrive package I should buy with the 525 to achieve this. I've been told that there's some important differences between them. I'll be selling the outdrive (brand new), as I won't have any use for it. I'm not having any luck getting information from Mercury. They don't give out details on the 525 to anybody except dealers and registerd boat builders, since the motor has to be installed by an authorized Mercury technician. Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated. Feel free to correct me on any of the above. Tony

I know someone that has an Arneson SD already and will be buying a 525 to put in front of it. Motor and drive going on a 22' Donzi classic. Sounds like you guys will be in the same "boat" as far as figuring stuff out.

My recommendation is to go with a Bravo III XR. The "duoprop" of the Bravo III will give you more stability and better handling since you going with a single engine application. The ASD is an overkill for your application, save all that money for other goodies.

Why buy a merc package, instead buy an engine from Mesa, Cobra, or Chief and have a stronger engine without having to get rid of everything else, the 525 is a nice engine but I think you will want more power than that in the boat. I don't know how fast you want to go but with that engine you would probably see around 65 mph. I started with an engine that was close to 600 hp and was seeing a gps hitting 71 and we are building the engine now to about 670 hp for a little more speed. The handling however is awesome, it makes for a better balance with a single. Much like a Pantera with a single setup. Another good thing about a single in a Magnum is it is VERY easy to work on with all the room in the bilge. Good luck with your project, been there, done that!!
