beware of cashier of certified checks
we had a lil pickup for sale. after taking all the calls i get one and the guy wants to come see it. seems he has a used lot and promised another truck to his customer but his partner had it sold.so, he needed one asap to get this customer taken care of. he and a partner came to look at it and they bought it. cashiers check from b of a. my gal was alone and questioned the check (at least she was cautious) but the bank said yes thats our check. she accepts the check and away they go with her truck. she runs to the bank asap only to have the cashier laugh and say," what should i do with this?" she by now realizes she's been had.
b of a told her to file with glendale p.d. and the fbi so now it's a waiting game. doesnt anyone make a legit deal anymore??? we're ready for some good luck....please....soon... |

Re: beware of cashier of certified checks
O.K guys this is an important scam and it is easy to be had. My wife works for a bank and see's a lot of scams and is working with the FBI on them.
In a nut shell these crooks are so good they actually will have the phone number of the bank (in this case B of A) on the check. IT IS A FAKE NUMBER and they will answer the phone as that bank and will verify the funds . My recommendation is to find the number of the bank on the check in the yellow pages or on line and call that number. The latest scam is to send people a letter telling them they won a lottery years ago and a bank check will be coming to them in the mail. Then they must send back (in a money gram) a sum of money to cover the taxes. These guys will also put a number on the letter and answer the phone as that company and will talk to you and sound very convincing. On Thursday my wife and some co-workers called the number on the check which was supposed to be the bank she works for. She personally talked to an impostor which verified the funds on the fake check. Then her co- workers on two separate occasions spoke to the fake lottery company which had there story down perfect. So as you see it is very easy to think you have verified the funds. |
Re: beware of cashier of certified checks
I read an article recently how counterfeit "cashier's checks" were the new ploy in town.......
|
Re: beware of cashier of certified checks
When I sold my world series tickets, I took the check to the bank and cashed it before I sent the tickets.
The lady was pissed, but I didnt care. CM |
Re: beware of cashier of certified checks
I once got a fake cashiers check also for 13k. It was so good that my bank took it and deposited it in my account only for it to bounce a week later.

Re: beware of cashier of certified checks
I wonder if they are so good that they would have a balance amount worked out too?
So if you ask the person that is giving you the check what the approximate balance is on the account. Then see if the person on the phone gives you something in the same range? If the amounts aren't even close, then you know something is up. Just a thought.... ;) |

These people are extremely organized. |

Of course I had to replace the funds 2 weeks later when they found out it was worthless....My bank just wanted their money back and had no interest in finding out who sent the check to me  |

It appears as though she DID call the bank and verified the check? If so, I hope she got a name of who she talked to...go back to the bank. |
Re: beware of cashier of certified checks
SOX,
I just thought that maybe telling the bank to hold on a second and cover the phone, then say to the person, they want to verify your balance and throw a wild number at him to see if the person just says yes that correct.... Just a thought... |
Re: beware of cashier of certified checks
Got ya, Sharkey. Good idea.

Luckily for me I did'nt trust the check although my bank told me not to worry...I took out the $5g and took it to the casino

Besides...most people aren't comfortable hauling aroung $150K, $50K, or even $25,000.00 in cash when purchasing a boat. I takes an awfully big briefcase, and it's not very practical!!!

Re: beware of cashier of certified checks
UPDATE********
we got the truck back from p.d. tonight. it was strange though. the truck we got back was detailed, all the small issues repaired and the a/c was fixed. when does anyone ever get a stolen vehilce back better than when it left??!!! now if i could only get those guys to steal the engines out of my "new/old" boat  truck deal only took days but the boat deal looks like it's going to take months.normally i'ld be on my second or even third oil change since september. now im just sitting waiting on the dealer to fix their mistake. |

truck was re-stolen  this time the guy called the original impound yard with a story on how we stole the truck. then he gets a buddy with a repo truck to come grab it at my house. neighbor see's this and tells me the story so i get l.e. on them quick. but not quick enough. now there's an investigation going on and they say we may never see the truck but the tow companies insurance will probly pay us off. i have never had so much negative in my life at once. wow what a test. thanks everyone for enduring my negative chats as of late  |

Re: beware of cashier of certified checks
The only way to prevent getting bad check or cash, is to exchange money using bank check, account transfer, etc. in person, at the buyers bank. The bank the check/account was drawn from. That's the only way I will do business anymore.
