Re: Bilge Heaters

I had a heater last season and all was great until the heater failed. Imagine having to winterize in the middle of January in 20 degree weather at 10 PM. Not fun. The heaters are great in theory, but unless you plan on keeping a backup unit, if it fails you will need to winterize anyway.

If you have sea strainers winterizing can be done inexpensively and in a few minutes with 5-6 gallons of red pop per doggy.

Bingo.

I am wondering why the big stink about winterizing... When I bring my rig to Florida for runs I winterize at the ramp when leaving after flushing the engines. It takes 10 minutes per sides by myself even faster if someone is there to help.

something else to consider is the corrosion protection in the antifreeze. if you only drain the blocks and use just the heater you don't have any rust inhibitors. i use to just drain the system on my Mirage and after a few years my manifolds and risers developed rust problems and I'm in fresh water. seems like that may have been a contributing factor.

I own a moderate size marina in va. its old the wireing is old, I dont like the idea of people puting heaters in the bilge, to me its seems dangerous.
