Hull protection when traveling?
Does anyone wrap the front of hull when road trip 500 or more miles? Road chips can be an issue. Oversize mudflaps or what do you use if anything? Thanks.

Re: Hull protection when traveling?
I use a stone guard mud flap/geezer guard that goes on the receiver of the hitch.you can get it at any rv dealership.looks bad but works great.

I had the same problem and put these brush things on. I see them on alot of motorhomes to protect their towed cars. They have worked well for myself. You can go all the way across the back of the truck if you want, I left a opening in the middle for the hitch. You might want to try Camping World thats where these came from and they also have other types. Doug

Re: Hull protection when traveling?
I looked at the RV brush type at 1st until I took a small rock from the parking lot and tossed it towards the guard and it went thru it. So I went the solid rubber type.

I use the big mudflap set up like posted up above. I was tired of the chips in the front of my boat and trailer.

The Ex was a friends. Didn't have a truck this spring. Traded mine off in Feb for a Jeep. Jeep didn't work out, so it had to go to make room for my new truck. Ramblin on about nothing, but figured better than just posting a smily for more post #'s. :evilb: |

Re: Hull protection when traveling?
I've got 'em built into the trailer. One of the only setups I've seen like it. Got an aluminum frame (like bow rail material) with a mesh screen that wraps around it and fastens to the frame of the trailer. No road chips on it at all, and that's quite a feat as I'm running BFG Muds and they love throwing rocks up. :D

Re: Hull protection when traveling?
I was told that you need to make sure it does not contact the ground, flips up rocks. I made mine from a truck flap bought from a farm supply place. Not as pretty, but only have $15 in it. Same concept. Leave it attached to my reciever, so it is always there when I slide 'er in.

I installed the 2 diagonals not knowing if I needed them. Like I said, not pretty but it works great.
That's how I made mine as well, a piece of angle iron, mud flaps from a truck supply place and a u-bolt that goes around the bottom of my receiver with 2 holes in the angle iron. All the weight sits on your receiver so the u-bolt basically just holds the angle iron from moving. Cost me about 40 or so dollars with the mud flaps being the most expensive part. Just cut them down to the size you need. Not the greatest picture but you can see them on the truck, I bought blue mud flaps to match my blue trailer and put some crome brackets on them so they wouldn't sail. They sit about 2 inches from the ground and have no problem covering up those 40" tires.... |

Re: Hull protection when traveling?
These have adjustable arms to raise or lower the height of the flaps. 240 bucks.

Re: Hull protection when traveling?
I have www.mudflaps.com and have used them on several trucks (nicely adjustable) with great results. Cabela's sells them for cheaper than the site direct.

I took a different approach to the problem. I have always had full covers made that wrap around the hull in the front. They are lined and slightly padded in this area to protect from rocks and road debris. As an extra bonus, they also keep all of the bugs and road grime off of the boat so that it is still spotless when you get to wherever you are heading. Be careful though. These covers must be form fitted and skin tight so that they don't flap in the wind and damage the finish on the boat.
The first photo here is our old Top Gun (now owned by "Lucky Strike" on this board) and the second photo is our old Gladiator. We were ready to make one for the Apache, but decided to wait until we pick a color scheme for the paint job so that we can color match the cover. |

Jeep had trouble just towing the trailer. Boat is a 32'. The Jeep Wranglers are only rated for towing 2000# with the manual, auto would drop it to 1000# |
Re: Hull protection when traveling?
If I have other ideas, I'll email them to you.....

Re: Hull protection when traveling?
Who made these covers for you and do you have a number?

Re: Hull protection when traveling?
Those covers were made by a local company called Canvas Experts. They recently moved to a new shop, but I don't know if they kept the old phone number or if there is a new one. I will find out and let you know. The old number was (410) 641-2228.

The new telephone number for Canvas Experts is (410) 213-8766.
Also, here are 2 more pictures of their full covers. The first one is my old 28' Pantera (owned by "Griff" from this board now) and the second picture is my cousin's current 39' Kryptonite. |
Re: Hull protection when traveling?
For long hauls, I have a cover much the same as Hot Duck's. We call it the Kitty Condom because it totally encases my Daytona. For short trips, I had the same canvas guy make me a set of 5 foot long trailering bras that slide on over the sponsons and bungee to the trailer about 10 feet back of the sponson tips.
