2.5's are faster than the 300's right? If you were buying a cat with out motors (28 skater) what motors would you put on?

I would go with the 300s faster and more consumer friendly
Merc is going to release a new 300 at the Miami show. Lets see what that is like

Stock the 300's are faster. The real fast 28's have motors that are not stock.

Big draw back on the 2.5's you have to mix the oil, that can get to be a pain.

They also have to be rebuilt more often, they run 8,200 rpms.

I have heard from a couple guys with 28's with 300x's like mine that are running 121+. I think with stock 2.5's they are running in the 112-113 range.

I owned another cat with 280hp 2.5's and I like the X's a lot better. They are more friendly around the docks, have been more reliable (knock on wood), and they pull harder off the low end.

I think T2x made the switch from 2.5's to X's and liked the X's better. He posted about it some time ago.

Skaterjim just ran 121.7, I know it was above 121. His boat has stock 300x's. I would say wait to see what the new 300's are all about, if they dont seem good, buy a used set of 300x's. The 2.5's are great motors if you dont mind working on them. If you plan on modding then go with the 2.5's. The 2.5's are also provide a better balance in rough water. 8200 rpm sure does sound good. 8200 rpm with a diamond tuner sounds incredible

The 300x is great motor, but if you want to run in rough water, top end kilo runs the 2.5 280's are the way to go.To get top speed your going to have to mod.them a little.I have run stock 280's @121 and Diamond motors @126mph.P.S. good luck finding 280's

Here is a great shot of Skaterjim's 28. Probably the best looking 28 I have seen.
