Not much really, about 3 less inches of pitch on the prop you should get about the same speed. In theory, the 1.5 would be faster if you can get props with enough pitch. Reason being the props will turn slower with the 1.5s and the drag of the blades entering the water will be reduced. Thats the theory, but every boat is different. I'm not a hydrodynamic engineer, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night :p

Changing the ratio is only necessary if the prop you NEED is not available.

The heavier the boat, the 1.50:1s give better punch.

Call APACHE they were doing some gear swap set-ups on Kemo a year or so ago. Mark should be able to help you, get her do for our run next summer in ohio.

I went from 1.5 to 1.61 this summer, got better midrange and picked up 2 mph's. The bigger the diameter the better it stays hooked up in the rough water. What I hear anyway. Worked for me. NK

With 1.63 gear sets and 33pitch props at 5800 rpm 1% slip is 110mph. They must have a lot of cup in them. 6800 rpm with 10% slip is 117mph which is still very good.

I was wondering how my 1000hp motors spinning 18 x 35 four blades 5900rpm's thru 1.61 or maybe 1.63 gears gave me 102? NK
