Terry....I'm on a corner on the Palaco canal...white Christmas tree on the dock out back and older blue 30 Velocity on the lift on the side canal. Watching your boats go by is usually the high point in my day. Skip

I rode in Terry's boat in Key West and the new quiet exhaust was awesome! I NEVER thought I'd like a quiet performance boat but this was pretty sweet. You get to hear the engine whine and no longer need headsets to have a conversation. Definitely a great idea!

Thanks again Terry.

Re: Worlds QUIETEST 36 Nor-Tech!!!!!!!!!

Looks and sounds great!
A lot of the noise reduction is because of 2 other notable items; 2-into-1 exhaust and the tailpipes are wet for a fair length, but low enough to have less risk of reversion. Of course having it under water at idle helps around the dock and being aimed back low and into the prop wash helps even more at speed, but I think a reasonable job could be done without the exit in front of the prop, just off to the sides. You could put 2into1 on cats and stagger vees to the outsides down as low a possible (might have to be a little higher because of tabs), and 2into1 on the insides on side-by-side vees. This still has to be less restrictive than mufflers.

In response, Nor-Tech in conjunction with CMI has developed a new system for our Supercats that routes the exhaust below the waterline and through the transom below the gimbal housing.
This system virtually eliminates most of the noise at idle. To relieve any back pressure there are 1" vent pipes that exit above water but the maximum at idle with Mercury 850's was 83db. Well below existing limits. In fact most of the noise present is coming from the fuel pumps and blower whine.
Once on plane the exhaust is introduced into the prop flow.
At high speed the only sound heard both inside the boat and outside is again, the whine from the blowers. It actually sounds like a muffled turbine.
Mercury was concerned initially about possible back pressure. According to their tests not only was back pressure absent but it created a vaccum, flowing better than tail pipes.
The end results, close to totally quiet and no loss of performance or horsepower.
This system is available for all new Nor-Techs and available for the retro fitting of existing boats.
Terry

Terry,

I just watched the latest video released here on OSO/powerboat TV with the clip on this whole new set-up you have developed with your team.

My only question is:

How does putting all that airiated pressure into the prop not affect it and increase prop slip / decrease the performance?

Thanks

The underwater exhaust on Sunseekers 34 and 48 (actually 40 and 50 when fitted with surface drives) has nothing to do with Sunseeker. It is part of Fabio Buzzi's transom design for Trimax surface drives. It's very effective as far as noise reduction is concerned but it also virtually eliminates smoke and transom soot usually seen on diesel boats. It also actually helps performance, especially coming on plane.

We've delivered more than a dozen of these set-ups since this post. Haven't seen any negative side effects.
With the 6's the top half of the prop is out of the water at speed so the airiated pressure doesn't seem to change anything.

It kind of reminds me of the exhaust set up on my wakeboard boat. The nortech is cool seeing it idle into a cove and you can't even hear it.

Terry,

Are you doing this on your V-bottom boats also or just the Cat's ?

Didn't RICK Sr (RIP) from INNOVATION come up with this like 10 years ago on the INNOVATOR? I mean really this isn't "NEW" technology much less created / invented by Nor-Tech. Let's give credit where it is due. Just my $.02

I was referring to the Superhawk 34, which I believe is a Don Shead design, and is normally fitted with 315hp Yanmars on Bravo 3's .

Yes to an extent that is true and it was used on the Nor-Tech 380 "Innovator".
It was also an underwater exhaust but that's about all it has in common with what we're doing now. Basically the exhaust was routed down to a collector box at the aft of the bilge and then would exit down into the notched transom. Unfortunately about the only good thing was that it was quiet.
Two major problems:
Since the exit was down thru the bottom of the boat,
there was no relief for the exhaust and caused significant back pressure. A 24V starting system was required. The other problem was whenever the boat launched and landed there was again so much back pressure that the engines would bog down and lose all throttle response.

I don't think anybody can take credit for underwater exhaust being "NEW" technology. What we did was come up with a new and unique way to make it work without any of the negatives.

I dont recall them saying it was new to the world. It is new to a 36 cat. Delo had a need to stop from being kicked off the lake and Nortech answered it. Great going Terry and crew.

Re: Worlds QUIETEST 36 Nor-Tech!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like a great setup, i love quiet, nothing drove me nuts like driving around with a noisy CAT 3126 about 12 inches from my butt. The guy who designed the exhaust on that thing was the dumbest human alive. He managed to create a perfect resonance at idle and cruise speeds, it was absolutely painful to drive that stupid boat.

I read a book last winter titled "The Blockade Runners of the Confederacy". There was a chapter about the Rebels inventing underwater exhaust on the steam engines to escape detection from the Union blockade ships. They had valves to switch to shift from the smokestack to underwater(possibly the first silent choice) but only used it when necessary because of the back pressure on the engine. Just a little history 101 tonight. :D :drink:

just a question ,how about sitting in open water can waves and water get pushed up into cyls thru open exhaust valves, otherwise sounds cool

No more chance than any other exhaust that exits the drive or below the water line like almost all pleasure sterndrives.

We have on the 50 V with 6's. On the Bravo we use transom mounted turn downs to put it under the water at idle only.

Terry,

What power was in the 50" V-Bottom? Did you notice (Anything) Different from the cat to the V-Bottom?

Also I for one like the sound of two into one exhaust very unique very different. But if memory servers me seems the biggest reason people have gotten away from that is the ( Y )
pipe cracking at the welds with heat expansion. I don't see that as a problem with your rubber connectors.

But in the past year or two the 41' Apache WarHawk was restored and he had two into one exhaust and was hoping to go with it again. Can't remember the details, but if memory serves's me ( I Think ) Teague wouldn't warranty the engines in the configuration. Or felt the would make the proper power, they are Teauge 900's.................

So is Mecury concerened with that?
Also are you increasing you exit pipe, like going from two 4" pipes into on 5" or 6" pipe to keep the flow?

Thanks
Cougarman

The 50 V had trip 850's
The collector pipe is 6" i.d.
Mercury loves the system and is pushing for everyone to do something like this.

It would be great to have this available for the aftermarket, but I suppose that it's a custom item or for an OEM who can order multiple sets.

Do you think the NorTech cat setup might work on other cats? I'd like to have it.

I have custom turndowns on my 50v with triple 6's, had to custom make them so they would fit between drives, etc, work awesome, would work on other cats if you have enough room to drop exhaust behind motor thru transom, the nortech cats have a ton of room in the engine compartment. I'm sure cmi will build you a custom set of tailpipes for the under water exhaust, but open your wallet.

wiggler,
Not so sure CMI is anymore expensive than others on downturns. What are you getting for a pair of your custom downturns? CMI maybe cheaper than you think.

here is a pic of the first set before they were polished, as you c an see a standard cmi or gibson would not work on a triple 6 application, will take some pics of all 6 on after they were polished and finished, these were a custom o.d. , length and turn down depth.
