That's the problem - most parents think their kids do no wrong.
When I was a kid - if I did something wrong I would be disciplined. Today - most parents pick up for their kids even though they did something wrong. This is a perfect example of what happens when kids are allowed to run free at such a young age.

I agree as well, but most of us are tight on this one. He did the crime-he must do the time, this kid makes us look bad, too much alcohol and driving a boat is bad ... yada yada yada

I'm not saying he doesn't need to be punished. He took someone's life and needs to face the consequences. I'm saying before we all start preaching we need to take a moment and remember what it was like to be 18.

Like Downtown42, one slip and that could have been many of us back in the day!

I wonder if the kid owned the boat or the parents? I know a lot of people here went solo on boats from a young age. But, did your parents allow you to drive the boat at 12AM? When they probably knew that you use alcohol and drugs?

I had keys to the boat at the marina. Use it whenever. They never knew what was going on, at the same time I tried to be careful.

I am not defending kid either. He will and should do time. I have easier time accepting this then the drunken boat dealer that killed 2 folks last summer.

I tend to agree, but that isn't me.
My daughter broke the law and got caught when she was 15. I could have talked the cops into dropping the charges but I didn't. I told her that she got herself into this mess, she'll have to work it out. I stood by her side all through the court proceedings and made sure it went according to plan. She served a lengthy community service sentence and had write an essay on what she did and why it was wrong. She came out of it with a totally clean record and a valuable lesson was learned.

I've had my own boat since I was 9. I never had to ask permission to take it out, just let mom or dad know I was going. I never did anything really stupid or dangerous. I knew the laws and how to be responsible, as did most of my friends. Maybe I was better than most kids my age back then.

WOW - that does not sound typical or average. I think many adults today can think back to a time, or event, that SHOULD HAVE changed lifes direction, but lucked out. Of course, when we got caught, we got a beating and were grounded for weeks

Milw Journal 7/23/1978...there's the boat I had "free range" on.

Other than running out of gas and Coasties towing me in, all was well.
