What would you say to this???????

How about this...........
I found a 1986 Wellcraft...Scarab...I beleive.....either 33 0r 36 footer......all white with stupid ass arch....

It has triple merc 200's on it on an extension.....Perfect shape hull.....interior like new and dash near perfect.....save for the sitting outside....justa little dirty....

I'm just gonna tell you what I saw....I don't know much about these guys.....so please advise....

It has a teak floor....great shape but dry...still dark in color......all the dash is there....the hour meters read like 320 and 340 and I beleive 380 or something close like that....they are inside beside the shore power panel.....

It's got all the dash instruments and they look to be in good shape clarity wise....One captains chair....didn't see another one on board.... The transom seat is a wood panel job that is hinged and lifts upwards to show batteries and such....The cabin is simply nice......looks to be all original and no tears or rips they are in a blue white color.

The hull and transom seem to be in great shape.....I know how to spot a wet one or one that's gonna be....I kinda use the tap and tug routine...looks like it's been sitting for about 10 years under a tarp...but the cabin had absolutely zero mold smell or odor.....very dry...

And of course it sat on a three axle trailer with a big extesion on the back past the outboards.....

Now here is the intereting part......without the outboards he would let it go for $6000...

What would you think it would run to rig it with a pair of big blocks and transom assemblies.......fuel tanks and drives.......or is this just a headache waiting to happen....

This boat is about 4 miles from my house at a boat yard.....

NICKSLICK 01-30-2002 05:49 PM

dude...

Ok... how much money you got... be honest... how much AT WORST could your drop on this boat... IF YOU HAD TOO...

You tell me that, and Ill tell you what to do from there...

Hot Boat 01-30-2002 05:56 PM

Its about time you look to get a new boat I would just slap a pair of 300 Pro Max's on the back. It would cost a lot less than re rigging the whole boat. And be fast as hell  :D

Scooter 01-30-2002 05:56 PM

Well sounds like a great project boat, the amount of money depends on the equiment you want to run. The engines could use crates get to 502 for about 7200.00 pair, then you have drives etc. it could add up quickly, depends on the electric lines, rigging. i wouldn't i ran itto a cigarette up here for 10,000.00 no power, or anything after going back to look a few times you see the work or even the problems that my happen.

just i opion,

Ron P 01-30-2002 06:00 PM

How much with the motors?

NICKSLICK 01-30-2002 06:04 PM

The ultimate irony...

Gasm with a SCAR that doesnt work...

Catmandont... you around?

there is a God...

Shorgasm 01-30-2002 06:08 PM

It is rigged for three and one is on there and the other two are inside.....from talking to him I would say not terribly too much more for the whole ball of wax....

He doesn't seem to be too in "love" with it anymore.....

I actually stopped to look a 42 Scarab..once again I believe here....I have seen it tucked away for a while.....all black sides and not real bad shape....or so I thought.......

Come to look at this yard they moved it up to the shop and I had to go ask....it's got triple 454's.....all fresh and one is back in....a 1990 model......HUGE trailer..MYCO all white and nice.....moderate engine work 600 HP....

All was good but mechanic told me take a look...it had been under water once....I looked at the empty Thru-hull exhaust holes......Oops.a little bit of rot there...

BIG ASS boat though...damn narrow though.....I'm sure my little bayliner is just as wide....8' or so...

Sean 01-30-2002 06:12 PM

shor...find out about the outboards...I might be interested in them. email me.

[email protected]

Shorgasm 01-30-2002 06:17 PM

I'll see if I can go over there tommorow....kinda cramped up here with woman now........she still moves pretty slow.....and still whines a bit........that's okay though......I like the "twins" :D :D :D :D :D

HydroScream 01-30-2002 06:22 PM

egg beaters? right on

32fever 01-30-2002 06:24 PM

I think you should pass and buy a Fountain :D

If you buy a 33' Scarab, you pay for 33'. There's just something wrong about that.

:p   :D

PD32GT29, I know, I know. Bite me Shor.

Sounds like A LOT of work to me. I'd rather be boating than wrenching. To each their own.

Madcow 01-30-2002 08:54 PM

So what are you saying "Buy a 33 pay for 33' of boat". You mean as opposed to buying a Fountain as in buy a 32 get 30 foot of boat and 2 foot of beak? :D

Madcow 01-30-2002 08:56 PM

Is this a center console or a regular Scarab?

Warp & Woof 01-30-2002 09:06 PM

If you want 33 foot of boat, buy a 35. These people just don't get it :D

Jeff 01-30-2002 09:14 PM

Sounds like a Scarab III Super Sport. Drill a tiny hole in the transom and see how many gallons of water run out. If the price is real right anything can be fixed. Lots of room in those boats but maybe 70 mph with triples. Wellcraft sold a ton of those to smugglers.

MnFastBoat 01-30-2002 09:16 PM

sounds a little to much work
you want to take an outboard boat and turn it into I/O's
talk about an all NEW stringer system at best
I am sure it was not stringered for that
Much easier to turn an I/O into an outboard
rig it with the OB or leave it alone
No way would I do this
but then again I would not buy a Scarab

Tinkerer 01-30-2002 09:20 PM

It is more than likely an old SCARAB III. With twin 454 it will have a top end of about 55-60 mph. After 1990 it was called a 34 SCARAB and the hull was reworked and top speed goes up to 60-65 mph. I own one of the 1992 models. With stock 502's it had a top speed of 70 mph. Very strong hulls-very good ride. Likes the rough stuff. :)

THE BULL 01-30-2002 09:26 PM

this is how it will work....you buy the hull for 6k, you rig it for i/os like you want with drives, you will spend with labor 30k. so you will have 36k in a boat with teak. dont do it, look for a boat already completed!!!!! you will NEVER get your money back!!! i know, i made the same mistake and it cost me 80k   oh yeah, and its now for sale with 160hrs for 30k... :(

Pure Energy 01-30-2002 09:29 PM

Two complete engines.............$24,000
Two complete drives..............$10,000
Guages and controlls.............$2,500
Steering.........................$4,000
Fuel tanks.......................$2,000
Rigging,glass work,labor,........$40,000
structual work, fixing bugs, custome work, etc., etc., etc.

Run away!!!

loosecannon22 01-30-2002 09:31 PM

HEY SHORE, THE OLD BLACK ONE??? I THINK I KNOW OF THAT BOAT. IF IT WASD THE ONE I AM THINKING OF IT WAS A SMUGLERS BOAT. IF ITS IN OUR AREA THEN IT IS THE ONE I KNOW OF, I DONT KNOW OF THE OTHER ONE WITH TRIPS THOUGH, GOOD LUCK.

tripps 01-30-2002 09:45 PM

Hey Shore buy it with the mercs,i love my 30 with tripps, youll become a mercmechanic real fast like i did :D :D :D TRIPPS

FWK 01-30-2002 09:49 PM

If I remember Wellcraft made a flat deck 34 outboard model I can't remember what it was called. Keep the outboards. Forrest

pullmytrigger 01-30-2002 10:05 PM

Shor.....Im with TooOld 100%, You'll have plenty of things to eff around with, with a used boat that works, let alone a used boat that doesnt work or needs a complete re rig. Buy someone elses complete re rig, they never get their money out of them....Doug

Audiofn 01-30-2002 10:30 PM

If you were to get this boat I would re rig with outboards. You have no idea the acceleration you will get with tripples on the back   I would find out the asking price with power, bolt them back on there and have a blast with it. Outboards will run for ever if you give them gas and oil :D :D

Jon

Madcow 01-30-2002 10:33 PM

Some of these guys are right. I poured over $40,000 into an old 30 Scarab. Sold it last year for $20,000. And mine was already rigged with I/O's. If it is an old 34 super sport outboard, they make great party boats!

timewarp 01-30-2002 11:51 PM

Shor,
If you can get the motors with it cheap that would be the way to go. Or 2 300 promaxs. The other thought would be to put 3 250's on the back, I think with the right shopping around you could pick up some newer(later than 1996)3.0 litre 250hp EFI Offshore Mercs fairly inexpensively and end up a lot cheaper than the promaxs with more power.
I think re-rigging for I/Os would end up costing alot more and would be a ton of work.
Just my $.02
Caleb

puder 01-31-2002 01:23 AM

pick it up cheap and keep the eggbeaters!

Ryan Beckley 01-31-2002 10:43 AM

My friend has a 34 Scarab with I/0's very slow. Keep the OB's. More room probably about the same milage. New 300's will set you back about 30 G's. Plus if one does puke that boat will still probably plane on two.

EggBeater 01-31-2002 01:07 PM

I bought my scarab 380 setup for trip O/Bs, after calling around the the riggers I spoke with said that the balance would be off going to I/Os, plus in mine I would have to remove the huge knee braces, add stringers, and pullup the floor to get the fuel tanks out and cut them down, as they run too far back, as is I hold around 350 gallons of fuel. Hmm, Think it was a smugglers boat.

Shorgasm 01-31-2002 01:40 PM

Yup this is what I figured....I beleive it would only be a deal if you had access to free parts and labor......

I think it would be fun to screw around with....but would prefer one more complete for a little more money..... ;)

LEOPAJJM 01-31-2002 02:14 PM

Shor... how about a '98 302 scarab sport w/ merc 250's, super clean, nice cuddy, 60 mph??

Shorgasm 01-31-2002 02:20 PM

Why do you ask???.....You gonna pay for it.........Cause I'm sure that's a little out of my league...... ;)

EggBeater 01-31-2002 04:10 PM

Hey, shore if you decide to takc another look could you see how much setback the bracket is and how high the prop shafts are set. It would help me a bunch with a baseline when I rig mine. pics would be way cool.

Thanks, Mike

P.S. I think I would go for it.

What an old thread.

Did you mean teak or Bob Teague?

Teague = speed and cool imho:drink:

RT930turbo 04-06-2011 02:30 PM

I'm a big fan of old school... and it's Teak btw ;)

SS930 04-06-2011 02:53 PM

Some screen names I haven't heard in quite a while. I kind of miss trying to decipher Puder's spelling/grammar. :drink:
