Re: What ever happened to CHEROKEE BOATS?
If you are referring to Cherokee Powerboats in Miami:
They made a single I/O 24' A 28' twin outboard fish boat, A 28' twin I/O sport boat They are currently out of production. (1998 was the last reported year). There was also a Cherokee/McKenzie boat out of Tennessee, but they built only small outboard aluminum boats from 1971 to 1980. That's all I know. Sorry. |
Re: What ever happened to CHEROKEE BOATS?
Isn't Cherokee Eric Froberg's old company? I thought it might be the Apache 28' mold, not sure though.

My Brother owns original Cherokee Renagade 320
Speaking of awesome offshore racing boats my brother Pat Hyland owns the original showroom model with cubby cabin and live well (converted to ice chest/bar) The boat will do 85 easy on the rough Lake St Clair with it's deep v hull and twin blueprinted 454's. Great fun as the other 2 were used in offshopre racing before the Cherokee Boat company went uder and sold hull and designs to Apache.

Cherokee Boats Inc of Romeo, MI & Koleva, MI
Cherokee Boats Inc of Romeo, MI & Koleva, MI. Started building boats for local Sheriff's then subsequently for Charter Boats Capt's. Was wildly popular Great Lakes Charter Boats solidly built boat from around 1984 to 2009. A few models were built in 25 & 27 foot, 28, 30, 31 foot also. Known as the "Brave", and later as the "Chief". I own a Cherokee Sport Fisherman (hull #28) built in 1987. I was told they built somewhere around 150 total. The owner was known as a Race Boat Builder prior to building the Sport Fisherman. He's Dead. One of the two factories burnt down. I'm not sure what or where others involved went. I'm actually gathering facts so don't quote me as 100% clear yet. If anyone is interested I started a Facebook Group called CHEROKEE BOAT FAN CLUB. I currently have about 10 members all of which are Charter Fishing Capt's from MI or OH, where the vast majority of these ended. I can't post url's as a junior member.

Speaking of the Boats built in Romeo MI. Macomb County Marine Division still uses a Cherokee. They keep it at the boathouse on the Clinton River. They dont use it a whole lot anymore. But it is in the water every year. What was the name of the builder?

Your correct in regards to the plant or at least one anyway just a short distance from home in Onekama MI. They built a awesome rough water boat and rock solid. Thats where my 28 challenger deck and hull were laid up and then transported back to cedar springs MI for the rigging was done. That was mike and Sean bowers the owners of challenger boat works facility in cedar springs. It’s to bad they had to close up shop as they built once heck of a boat. I was very close to both of them during those times as I purchased directly from factory. Saved a great deal of money as others did as well however they were kinda side stepping their dealers and things started to go south on them. To bad they didn’t make through those difficult years. I would buy another super v28,in a heartbeat. My dad purchased a 38 fountain and I built some 675 sc’s for it. Our top speeds were near identical and my 28 would out perform the 38 ftn incrough lake MI like no other in rough water. Needlesa to say say I was in the kaleva plant about 5-6 years ago and almost threw up. Many hulls, decks and even some molds were all cut up. Made me sick. I recall there some issues going on btwn owners etc that didn’t sit and they might have some litigation going on way back but the remains were still there in the back part of the plant. |
Did the 28 that was for sale in Florida a few months ago ever sell?
