Question 1987 Saber 28'

Has anyone had any experience with an older (mid/late 80's) Saber 28' Offshore? Found one up for sale and have not been able to tack much info on one. Are these pretty well built boats? This one has a single big block. Any info would be appreciated. Also, wondering how to go about pricing this boat. Is in pretty good shape for the year, single bib block with 600 hrs. Also comes with trailer. THANKS FOR ANY INPUT...

The 28' Saber is a great boat.
I am curious as to what outdrive it has on it.
1987 was an interesting year for Mercruiser outdrive availability.
I found a 1987 28' Scarab, a few years back, that had a Bravo outdrive. Had to be one of the first Bravos as they were more or less introduced in 1988.
The 454 Magnum came with an Alpha in 1987.
The TRS was still being used in 1987.
Do a search on this site for more information on the 28' Saber.

They are great boats, very custom built, made for ruff water.

great boats. and i would think it has a bravo on it. i know the brothers pretty well and never remeber them using a trs drive. a surface has on the first one. when they could not sell it they install a bravo package on that one. i have the surface drive on my 19' baron. hey wieland what color is the one you are looking at.

There was a red single engine for sale last summer along the hy way between Muskegon and GR near Marne, she looked a little rough. Good luck, they make a great boat.

There is one here in England that raced for a few years. Very good in the rough but not especially quick.

I was fortunate to throttle it for a couple of races when it ran with twin 2.5 efi race motors built at Smilin Jacks and it topped out at about 74 mph.

I was told that it had a bit of rocker in the hull so of course that didn' t help matters.

There are several differences, some minor, some significant, between the original few 28's and the newer ones but they are all good solid boats. As far as pricing goes, condition and equipment will be the determining factor on actual value. Does it have k-planes, hydraulic steering, zero effort controls, nice trailer? If you a truly interested in a 28, make sure you call the factory and talk to Jim or Doug. Many times they know of boats that are available that are not listed anywhere. They are good people to work with and will be patient with you in your search. Good Luck!
