Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
My place of employment has an opening in Marathon Florida. I was thinking about putting in for it. Slim chance of getting it, but I figured it can't hurt to try.

Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
Lucky dude! A few years ago I made arrangements to fly down there to check out a house with a drive on grass airstrip in the front yard and clean canal moorage in the backyard. Sadly it was sold within 2 days, and by the time I got there, the new owner already had a nice Beech staggerwing parked under it. What was the asking price on the house? 300k AAAArrrrrggg! Sometimes it is worth buying sight unseen. My last best shot at the affordable dream house. Likely worth three times + that now.

Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
I looked at houses in Marathon and local Keys in 1994 :(

|
Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
Yeah.....they are all right.
But it all depends on what you want access to where you work and live. Best part..........today it's in the low 70's and feels like spring in Philly.........where we were "transferred" from. But if you want the "con's", email me. (and where's the job?) Pat D.........Marathon |
Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
I would go RIGHT NOW if it was me.

Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?

Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
"Nice" real estate in the keys is pretty pricey, even by south Florida standards.
However, there is tons more inventory on the market compared to last year or the year before, so there is the occasional good deal. |
Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
Only down side is evacuating every three weeks for hurricanes during season.
|
Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
That is what you need the plane for. Flying out in your own thrash and crash, beats sitting in horrific traffic jams every few weeks during summer, err, evacuation season.

Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
Perhaps I should start looking for a job in Florida, especially in Marathon... I have a feeling that it beats the **** out of Stockholm, Sweden... :drink:
Anyone looking for a Design Engineer?! |
Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
I was told that is why the position opened up. It was costing the guy there now too much $$ for housing :(
|
Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
Several real nice liveaboard marinas in Marathon also, but it will cost you $300,000 + for a fifty foot slip. Add in the cost of a boat, and it is a bit cheaper than a waterfront house.

Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
I have a 32 Cruiser now :D

:drink: ALRIGHT !!!!! A new McDonalds in Marathon !!!!!!!! :drink: |
Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
Well Cap, you are all set. Live on your boat in Marathon for a couple of years, probably the best time in your life, then transfer out of the hurricane zone back to PA. Rent your currrent house so you don't lose out on real estate appreciation.
I'd already be there if I were you. |
Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
I'll put in for it but I expect lots will.
I found out that people that do get it only stay a short time. ONLY due to housing costs. They fall deep in debt within 2 years or less then transfer out |
Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
Now is the best time to go...some housing is already backwards by %15-%20...
It's starting to be a buyers market... It's the same here on Marco... |

Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
If you don't like boats or water, you won't like it there.
Some friends owned a home there a couple yrs ago. Buy a house for 1x, live in it for a couple yrs, sell it for 3x. That's were I want to retire. Right in the middle of the Keys and where no one is in a hurry to do anything. Where else can you find a 5 million $ home right next to a mobile home and think nothing of it? :evilb: :evilb: |
Re: Marathon Florida Pro's/Con's?
SSSSSSSSsssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seems a bunch of us will likely be playing bingo together at age 80 there. <gg> |
