What is the diference between a 454 Short Block and Long Block

Just as the subjet title says.

A boat I just came across says new 454 short block. Is the short block taller? I am assuming this because it is the same cubic inches.

Anyone know?

Chris

I am not an engine expert so maybe some one else can jump in and give you further details. A 454 short block would include the block, crank, connecting rods and pistons. A long block would include everything above plus heads, cam and a complete valve train, I think.

A short block refers to a block and fitted pistons, crank, cam. No heads, oil pan, etc

A long block has the heads maybe more.
A complete block is intake to oil pan, sometimes carb/injection, water pump.

The blocks are the same size. A short block generally is purchased with just the block and the rotating assembly where a long block includes the heads, usually a cam timing chain and cover. Judging by your question you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. But trust me, the blocks are the same size

So your saying it is the same thing. Short block and long block have same components, just one is more complete. So, if an ad says replaced with 454 short block, that means all of the other stuff came off the old engine and just replaced that piece?

Correct?

Dangerous Dave,

Sorry, did not see your post yet, that answers it.

Question. If the guy replaced the short block portion of the 454 (10 hours on it), but the other stuff is 11 years old orginal, is this the rusty pipe scenario? Meaning is the new block going to cause problems for the remaining parts and blow them out early, or do those parts last?

I am concerned that the ad says "new short block 10 hours", but really is an 5 hours away from a complete rebuild.

Thanks for all the responses.

Chris

most of the other parts last a pretty long time if used in fresh water. If you have 11 year old parts on a salt water boat be a little cautious. If you're not too mechanicly inclined do yourself a BIG favor and budget a couple hundred bucks for a good mechanic to do a compression test and leakdown test. That will usually tell you if the heads are good. (to a certain extent)

Thanks Dangerous Dave.

If I look at that boat further, I will definitely have it compression and leakdown tested.
