Re: Don Johnson's 50' cat

The last time I saw it was in Key West at the Worlds.

The boat had some hull damage and some how word got to Don Johnson that I was at the race to make glass repairs.

They came and found me, and I was escorted onto the BASE where it was being kept.

I got up inside, crawled to the bow of the boat and made my inspections. By the time I came back out, his crew was still in the works of flying the people in from Miami that I assume built the boat.
Once I came up on deck, that was when they told me they were flying a crew in. At that point I wished them luck and started driving off the base. Until I was stopped by a black mini van with all blacked out windows. It was Don himself asking me if I could help him out. My response was that his crew had everything under control..
I saw them in the morning of the race with heat lamps trying to get the epoxy to cure. When I saw Don at the driver's meeting he said the boat would be ready.
And it was...
That boat was wicked fast back then once light on fuel.
but like in NY, Don liked to put the hammer down right from the very beginning of the race straining the powerplants.
NyY he had a hell of a lead on everyone, but only to break down before the race was over... :(

That's my story and I am sticking to it..... :drink:

it just seems huge cuz its 50 feet long and there isnt a 80 foot cat next to it to make it appear smaller kinda like big hair on a fat girl

I can't remember for sure, but if he was, Johnson probably told him to run WOT at the start of the race...
I know Richie knew what the consequences by doing that...

Thanks Joe! :drink:

If you do a search in the classifieds you might be able to find it. It was forsale in there. I believe it is in the Poampano Beach area of Florida.

I'm fairly sure the boat is parked on a trailer at Erikson Marine in Austin Tx. I think it is getting re-powered with a couple of big turbines.

It was at turbine marine, but was sold before Xmas and went to Texas

I think that boat behaved itself much better in clean water and DJ felt safer out front. Richie Powers knows better than to push a heavy boat to the max right away. Actually I liked that strategy because when that cat was on 3 engines, INXS could scoot right past!

Re: Don Johnson's 50' cat

It was wicked fast, even in the "real worlds" held at AC, NJ the Trump World Championships in 10-12' waves. Don was running real well early, then broke. I had him under tow for about 30 minutes until he got it fired up and he went in under his own power. He even invited me aboard the "Trump Princess" after the race for drinks to say thank you...
