Mermaid is a little cheaper than the others and I have heard only good things about them. A place down here called Weavers has good deals on them http://www.mmair.com/how_to_buy/deal...weavers_marine

I have done installs on a few boats and it is pretty easy if the boat is out of the water. And you have to be okay with drilling a couple of big holes in the hull Since the systems are precharged you just need to supply the peripherals like water and power. Tell him to take some time and realy think about where he wants to run the ducts-they need to be as big and as short as possible for best efficiency. One other thing-the intake portion must be perfectly sealed away from the bilge and the holding tank. Since a vacuum develops around the intake it will pick up even the slightest fume and endlessly circulate it in the cabin.

What about moving the A/C unit itself? Mine is under the V bearth avd every time it kicks on it wakes up my wife and I. Where can I put it so its not so noisy or what can I do to quiet it down?

I've done a few. They're pretty easy to put in. I've even drilled a hole in the bottom of a cruiser while in the water.
A couple things, a rotary compressor is VERY quiet, the fan is as loud as the compressor. They're also very energy efficient. That can be impiortant depending on the wiring/generator. But they take a while to start cooling. They're great near a sleeping area.
The condensate pan and drain tube ALWAYS clog at some point. Mount it some place where moldy condensate water will not get into carpet or upholstry.
Get the dial as opposed to the digital control. I've NEVER seen a dial control go bad, but seen a couple dozen digitals that needed replacing. And they're expensive!
Try the 2 links below for good prices.

No worse than changing out a frozen thru hull 1 1/2" fitting. Done that too.
Um, just dont watch "Titanic" before attempting it.
BTW, had a buch of rags, cork stopper, sump pump, and made sure the marina travel lift was working before I did it.

Not to hijack your thread but does anyone know about a/c with ice? One boat dealer I talked to said they can install a a/c unit that you put a block of ice in. I would like to know how efficient it is and how many hours it would cool for.
