hood scoop or not to hood scoop

if your flame arrestors are the shortest ones available for your carb, and are already touching your hatch, and you want to add 10-71s with intercoolers. so we are either going to add some tall azz hood scoops or cut holes, finish out and leave it open so well have the blowers sticking up out of the hatch. if our boat is kept in fresh water, with a building covering it, and a waterproof cover, what are the pros and cons of a scoop or leaving the blower, carbs, flame arrestor open? thanks

yeah we were looking at getting monstaa to make something out of billet with the cig logo to go in the scoop intake so it would still allow air, but keep foreign objects out

You either need to scoop them, or get a race hatch.

Here's pictures of a guy that went from scoops to a race hatch. I think the race hatch looks a thousand percent better. :)

Who makes a hatch like that? Is it a custom job or did the guy get it through the manufacturer?

yes but what hes talking about will not fit under a hatch like that, I'm going thru the same scenario. adding 871s and innercoolers. the scoops will have to be so tall they will look like crap.

It came off another Dominator, I'm not sure, but I think he got it from the factory, then sent it to Mitcher T to have it painted.

That's sharp, but he looses the use of the swimplatform in the conversion.

exactly! the flame arrestors already hit the hatch....once you add big blower and intercooler its gonna be sticking high out of the hatch.....

im doing mine, i think i will try to let the carbs and air cleaner stick up thru the hatch for now, trying to find some different scoops.

what boat are you doing this on? do you have any pictures of it so far, or are you just getting into it? if we have flame arrestors that were partially protected by those metal scoops that go around the flame arretors, what would be the main problem of having the engine open, as long as it was covered when it was parked? its ran in fresh water all the time, and the big canopies up front are still probably going to be taller than the engines sticking out. is it the blower and carb your worrying about, or just the flame arrestor?

Call Fred at Trick. He'll set you up with a few scoops.

If you go exposed I would be super afraid of some one getting caught up in the belt. You know while docking or rafting. Perhaps you could do a little of both. Raise the hatch and also have the scoops. This way you will not have a scoop sticking way up.

thanks phantom... i think those are the ones i was looking for (i believe they are stronger than usual automotive type scoops)
audiofn: thank you very good point....docking could be a huge problem with just me and my dad trying to get to the back of the boat with 3 hot motors, and belts to get caught in...

I've had one of them on my last two boats. They are strong.

Race hatch. Call Phil Lipship and talk to him about one.

Re: hood scoop or not to hood scoop

the problem is ive never seen a race hatch for a revo, i would really like an all fiberglass race hatch, but theres no one i know of near us who would be capable of doing it, and we can't take the time to take the boat somewhere for a month to do it.....also theres the cost..

375 Stinger... I think Audio was also making reference to something that can be a problem when you are about 3 years older.... Loose bikini tops getting sucked into motors.

375stinger 01-25-2006 09:43 PM

Re: hood scoop or not to hood scoop

if her bikini gets sucked into the motor......is that necessarily a problem? :drink:
