I have a 172 and it goes for 550.00 each chip is roughly $150.00 so yours may be a better deal.Is the 182 a colorsounder too?Mine does work pretty good.

The Menace 01-23-2006 06:26 PM

Re: is this a deal?

Gerry, I just bought another for the Skater for $499 at Boat US. I already have the chip.

Is the 182 series being replaced with the 192 series? I found it in the garmin sight, but it was not under their current products??

Gerry , I have the 182c in my OL and I can't see it worth a sh1t in the daytime while running. I had the 182 in my old Cig and I could read that a lot better than the 182c. Tom

Adjust the brightness on the screen!!! :eureka: :eureka:

I bought one at the '04 Miami boat show for $700 w/ the chip. I do believe that they are now an "obsolete" model. If that's the case, you will see all of the electronic wholesalers have them for a great price in the very near future. It's an awesome unit, we liked the one in our Bullet very much. Brightness was never an issue.

Ted G 01-23-2006 07:59 PM

Re: is this a deal?

The new one is the 192c which has all the map data for the country in it. So you don't need "chips" anymore. Right now it ain't no biggie, but if Garmin stops making the bluechart chips like they stopped making the G chart chips they will become very scarce.

As for visibility, I have never seen better than the Garmin color units-especially the 182c.

Re: is this a deal?

Not a bad price.
I love my 182C, works great I can see it clearly even in brightest sunlight. I don't know how I boated without it.

Re: is this a deal?

I have tried to adjust the brightness , but the brightness did not work. That is probably the problem . I will see if I can send it to the factory to be fixed. Thanks, Tom

Ted G 01-23-2006 09:29 PM

Re: is this a deal?

Absolutely Tom, I have used these things in BRIGHT sunlight with no shade or anything, never had a problem viewing them at all, I bet your's has an issue, might want to send it in.

I've got the same model. Happy with it and paid about that much without the chip last year. This year your price is OK since it's a discontinued model but if you look around you may do a little better.

I personally like the 192c. I think it is better since you dont need the chips. And boaters world sells the 192c now for $699.99.

Correct, 192 is the new one. I actually like the graphics on the 182c better. However, the data base in the 192 is out of sight.

The 192 requires NO chips. However, they gave me a price of $899.oo.

LOL :D Hey Bobby-you gonna be in Richmond???

I agree on the 192c. I need to pick up one for the Formula and it looks like that'll be the one to get, no more messing with chips.

Of course next year they will probably have one with about 10 times more memory for 100 bucks less

Tom, did you clean the screen with Windex? Windex removes the anti reflectance coating off the screen.

Fine print, gets ya every time.

Re: is this a deal?

I just bought a garmin 178c at the boat show for $505.00 programed chip $120.00.

Re: is this a deal?

You can get a brand new 182C for 681.71 to 699.19.
Go here, http://www.boatfix.com/elec/garmin1.asp
and scroll down until you find the 182C, and click on "Instant Quote"

So with the chip (about 150), yes it sounds like a good deal.

(BTW, Boatfix has great prices on most boating goods. )

:)

Re: is this a deal?

I was reading on the 192c...They say it does not have "Inland" waterways.I guess no great lakes.so you have to buy a chip for that
Also said to buy a chip for "Greater Detail" so i guess it's not loaded with
the complete chart ?....This info from GPScity Web site....
Anybody know more ?

You will have to check around from store to store. The one here has two left at 499.99 One internal antenna and the other is external. Both at 499. I think the 172 is at 299.00 now while they last.
