Buy or rebuild?
Loaded question I know...however, can you guys give me a level of comfort regarding the decision to rebuild my Bravo I upper?
Basically, I had a gear break and it thrashed the housing beyond repair. My mechanic told me that he inspected the lower, cleaned the metal and that all looked good however, I am uneasy about this - should I be?
New drive - $4200, rebuild - $2000. Part of me says spend more for piece of mind, the other part says rebuild and if I breakup again, I can rebuild again and still be ahead

Re: Buy or rebuild?
Actually Rich...I think you just answered for me. I should just rebuild for the sake of having more $$ to put down!
Issue now is I have no drive and a trailer that won't pass inspection so I couldn't sell her if I tried! Need to show her some love as she is still a pretty girl

A Bravo has no magic inside, just gears, bearings, shims and seals. As long as the lower is completely disassembled, cleaned, and inspected, you should be fine. The only time there are issues is when a new upper is just bolted on and the lower is not gone through also.

Re: Buy or rebuild?
Thanks insptech...in line with how I felt and good to be assured. The 'due diligence' on my lower has already been performed.
Regarding the $4200, that was for the entire drive....the upper rebuild is closer to $2800 as opposed to original $2k mentioned.
Regarding the Bravo I uppers for sale in the classifieds here...has anyone or do you know anyone that has bought from these folks? I would much rather spend $3k for a 2002/2003 in the box drive with a 1 year warranty than spend the same to rebuild. Unfortunately, none are close geographically so it involves sending money and hoping for a package in return. If I had piece of mind from others who had a good experience, I would certainly feel better.
