Wow thats alot of paint loss on those drives? Could that be from stray current?

I put over 40 of them on there in December. That ups the numbers a bit.

Paint is coming off due to electric current in the water. Once you get a chip in the paint, it spreads like cancer. Very common in fresh water. Especially if you dock near boats that have shore power or the electric lines to the docks are not grounded. All the excess current goes into the water. Its worse if you tie up downstream of a boat with shorepower.

Most likely poor primer and paint prep on the lowers ,it looks like it is isolated to just the lowers also.Still nice topgun for the price.

How do you prevent it ???????

My drive is toast after 2 seasons, I just thought I had a bad paint job,, paint was blistering so I figured at the end of the season I would prime and re-paint, took a season ending 130 mile trip to NYC and back, pulled the boat out of the water paint was gone and my drive was eaten away badly,, it's at the dealer as we speak getting fixed under 3 year merc. warranty... what also concerns me is that the anodes were like brand new no deterioration at all... ????

It's winter. When I was boat shopping, there were about 800+ listings. Then in the summer it's like 400-500.

From what I see it looks good to me (but what do I know??) That's what surveys a for :D

It looks like someone will be in a real nice Cig. for a great price.

For marketing reasons it wouldn't hurt to give them drives a fresh coat of paint.

If I had a bit more $$ in the bank I would be interested.

You check the zincs in the drive?? Behind the prop?

Re: Lots of boats in the classifieds!!!

First make sure your boat is grounded properly and you have the correct anodes for your water type fresh vs salt vs brackish. If that is all OK then you can blame the neighbor with his cabin cruiser and 2 electric lines hanging in the water. He is probbaly to blame and yes as stated above if you are down current you can't hide from the electric man :D

We had a guy with merc drives every season he would replace his annodes 2 times during the season. After an electrical guy checked it out they found 1 bad ground and a constant power supply that wasn't suppose to be constant rather then hooked up to a key on power supply.

I solved that problem on my cabin cruiser by adding magnesium anodes on my trim tabs and adding extra anodes on the drive. I can honestly say when I pulled myboat out compared to everone else. They were amazed. I also noticed Volvo drives don't errode as quick as merc. at least in my marina.

Volvo uses a different alloy in their drivess......C-spray?

Sorry to hi-jack this thread,,,, my boat is used primarily in the hudson, brackish water,,, the boat has 2 season, alum. anodes that look like brand new,, the wiring in our docks is atrocious to say the least. Like I said my boat is at the dealer getting fixed as we speak anything I can do to lessen the damage ??? getting them to fix the wiring in the docks ain't gonna happen... I have pics at home and will post tonight, you can see how bad it's eating through the lower gear case, upper cap, around the prop, it's pretty bad...

Even worse in salt water.

aluminum??? not zinc?

Chris288 01-26-2006 03:16 PM

Re: Lots of boats in the classifieds!!!

Aluminum anodes are good for all types of water,, salt, brackish, fresh, magnesium for pure fresh and zinc for pure salt, alum bridges all the gaps like I have int he hudson.......

Is it a lesser grade of Aluminum than your outdrive? You're drive case is aluminum so it would be eating away at both of them at the same time. Electrolosis eats away at the softer metal first, then goes after the next best thing. Then again, I'm use to salt water..

Cheap assurance buy yoursef a zinc fish and connect it to the negative battery terminal and hang it over the side of the boat.

I've heard of hanging those zinc fish from the tie bars between the drives. Is it better to connect them to the neg side of the battery? Never seen anyone do that. Sounds like a great idea, if it really works.

It works great, just as long as everything on the boat is grounded.

All the grounding wires in a boat are a light green, they should connect everything metal that is in contact with the water. Some folks even ground radar arches and windshields.

Connecting the zinc to the negative batery post is just like connecting it to the tie bar, drive, trim tab etc. just as long as they are all grounded. It will protect the whole system, it becomes an extra zinc.

Hey guys, boat was rerigged in 2002-3, and since then the owner has only been able to use it a couple of times, only 20+ hours!, so the drives even though need some TLC, are like new inside. The boat is priced at this number because it does need some cosmetic care!

RollWithIt 01-27-2006 02:11 PM

Re: Lots of boats in the classifieds!!!

Chriss288. The other responses pretty much sum up what you can do. The other thing that I know is that when you start to get the pitting and errosion from the electolosis, you need to clean the drive, sand prep and respray the areas so that there is no exposure other than the paint. Any spots the bare metal from the drive is exposed, will attract the damage and it will spread from there. I didnt know the problem got worse in the Salt. All my experience to date has been in fresh water.
