This is off Velocity's website under setting the record straight:
Steve Stepp would like to set the record straight:

FACT: Steve Stepp has no relationship to and/or did not design the “stepped” or ventilated bottom design, which has become so popular in recent years.

FACT: Stepped or ventilated bottom designs cause more boats to spin out and/or barrel roll more than any other hull design in boat building history.

FACT: In the past four years, there have been at least one spin out or barrel roll of a stepped or ventilated bottom boat with a professional driver at nearly every APBA Offshore Event.

FACT: In 1978, VELOCITY was the first offshore boat to utilize the “Pad Bottom” and Step (or notched) transom. These two Steve Stepp design features have been copied by more manufactures than any other offshore design in performance power boating history.

FACT: VELOCITY Powerboats builds SAFETY FIRST into every boat they build and will NOT build a ventilated design.

As far as old wave crusher designs, boats are like cars the new ones are faster, more efficent etc. Everyone loves to remember the super fast boat they were on 25 years ago or that famous Mustang/ Camaro/ Hemi that was the fastest car on the street ........etc. Reality is that a 1988 Top Gun couldn't break 90 MPH with any amount of naturally asprirated power and a new Top Gun TS will do that with 525's dialed in correctly. Remember 1985 Porsche's best US car didn't make 225 HP, now their cheapest model has more than that. A new M5 (4 door) has 500 HP and will dust off any 80's supercar! Apache, Cig. designs are timeless but without a lot of power they will get dusted off by anything new. That Revolution with triples that 375 stinger's dad is building will be really cool/ rare but probably won't break 90 MPH and will need a lot of power to be even an 80 mph boat.

No steps, no blowers, yet I bet back when it was built, there weren't many that passed it.

the 1990 top gun 90mph edition had twin n/a engines...and were hoping with 2880hp to break 90
agreed that what your implying it true, but back in the 80s and such, boat racing wasn't the same as it is today...it was a test of boat stability, reliability, build, and driver, unlike today where its just a fountain test course with lake boats running around in circles....

Exellent post! Hit the nail on the head.

I love hearing how only the old boats were the only big water boats and the new ones like Fountins, Donzi's etc. are not.

There is a lot of truth in there, BUT......Once again, the thread started talking about Big Water.

The point of the old days was to prove that both crew and boat could survive at speed over open ocean racing. Don't forget these races often ran over 200 miles, not to mention the Bahama's 500.

Many boats in that era, tried to run blower and turbo motors, they were fast but didn't finish.
