Re: Anyone have exp. with max mach. drives?

From what I have heard, not experienced, every drive failure will be due to the Mercury gears that they use and thus not a warranty repair. Please don't jump on me for chiming in when I don't own them!!!! I gave the disclaimer with my statement

I use the Maxx internals in my XR's and have been happy with them. I had a warrenty claim and they made it right!! Thanks Arron. Having said that ,,, I feel that all bravo type drives live and die because of tired oil and or poor set-up... The guys at Maxx have figured that out. and have changed some parts to give the drive more strenght and tighter tolerances,,, thats why they live longer !! Good Luck RHC

We run their Billet lowers and their beefed uppers on our 1997 TopGun. We did blow our Starboard lower and then the upper last summer in the first 30hrs or so @ 800hp+ . They stood behind them 100% and also turned them around the same week, great service in my book.

We have since pulled a bit of boost out of our program and they seem to be holding up well. With 45 total hrs on Starboard drive and 15 on port, there is zero play and no sign of metal in our fluid.

Re: Anyone have exp. with max mach. drives?

I have a pair of Max Machine drives that were very expensive. Max Machine advertises 1468 HP, 1100 HP, 1000 HP. With Mercury upper gears, which are probably seconds, all they are is an overpriced Bravo. As far as I'm concerned, the drives are junk.

Is this the boat? If so, I saw his drives at the shop being repaired after the first time out. :(

Not sure if thats his boat, but contrary to the other post about the problems being worked out...... I think it is being rerigged with Merc #6's.

Sonic 28,
How's your new boat? I see CSI used what was to be your Sonic in the latest ad. The paint looks great is just stinks about what happened.

Cuda,
No that isn't my boat.

VelocityKenDo,and Velocity Tom
How heavy are your boats, and how much horsepower and torque do your engines have? Yes one of my drives failed. Yes I'm thinking about rerigging with somthing else but not sure which way yet.Our boat is making 800hp and 867lbft of torque per engine and our boat weighs approx 11K with a full load.I may have a great deal for you!!

In my opinion I think they have the best upgraded bravo out on the market. I am running around 950 hp and 950 ft lbs of tq in a 5000 lb single v and run one of there upgraded drives. About once a season I break something, usually the lower gears. They have done alot with their upgrades and their quality control is good but you have to remember they are still only as strong as a stock xr gear. I heard B-max has a new drive out with stronger lower gears then stock. I wouldn't bother trying to run any kind of bravo style drive in a heavier boat though with power similar to mine other wise you will be dissapointed. The old style b-max still uses bravo xr lower gears which is what breaks in mine so I wouldn't waste my time with one of them either. I guess it depends on the power to weight ratio of your boat, the more your boat weighs the less power it will take to break the gears. For ultimate depedability you will need something with heavier gears,Smitty

Ya Ok I have a friend with stock xrs on 950s in an active thunder Thay last in normal very day boating! these max things just broke! in flat water! on less power! I run hard real hard! I would not put them things on my stock 390 with hp 500 efis!

Re: Anyone have exp. with max mach. drives?

Somebody please give me an answer to this question. Are all the alternatives out there, B-Max, Max machine Works, etc.... all based off the XR drive? If they have some XR parts, then why do people pay alot more $$ for these drives? Sounds like their weakest link is an XR part?

Thanks :D

Max worx is based on a xr housing and gears with better tolerances, bearings, shafts, coupler, billet cover and unbreakable tower. The regular bravo's had cast aluminum tower that they bored out and replaced with a billet steel piece. The xr housing has a better factory tower but still not nearly as strong as the max worx.
Imco (not the 4x4 or new 35,000$ one with a transmission) is very similar to max drive, upgraded parts (shafts, tower etc),still uses xr gears, there has been some people on OSO who have thought there assembly work might be sub-standard but who knows for sure.
B-max (the one thats been around for past 5 years or so)-Super heavy duty upper gears, upper housing, cone clutch etc, uses their version of a Imco style lower housing, still has stock xr type gears in it. I have heard they re-designed it real recently to make it stronger but not sure if lower gears are any stronger or the same.
Supposedly max worx has some kind of "treatment" or "process" for the xr gears, not sure if it does much if anything,Smitty
