Turbo 400 w TRS??

I just called a guy w a boat.
He thought he had a bravo w an auto tranny but the boat was from 1987, and I'm figuring it was a TRS from what he told me, but he is SURE there is a T400 tranny behind it.
Is it possible to put a Turbo 400 tranny into a TRS drive?

Thanks
Evan

I've been told they are Ford trannys. One guy said it's a C6, and another one said it's a FMX. I'm leaning towards the FMX tranny.

some are mercmatics (in some ways similar to a ford c6), the other are borg warner (72)

Re: Turbo 400 w TRS??

merctrans or Borg warner ..borgs were better supposedly. I never spit out a merctrans.

The Fmx transmission was between a C4 and a C6.

The MercTrans was made by Mercury. They use some Ford components like plates etc. The weak link was the pump gear. They have a tendency to split at the keyway. For lower hp applications (400 or less) they work just fine.

Cuda, the fmx was actually a 3 speed version of the old 2 speed ford cruisematic. It was fords "cheap" transmission they put in base model cars with v-8's.It was a carry over from the 50's. You can tell when you see one because it has a cast iron mid-section. There is a C5 between the C4 and C6,it is just a heavy duty C4 that was used in trucks mainly, and all 3 of the C transmissions used a aluminum case,Smitty

I don't know if th-400's were ever used with a trs but I have seen them in v-drive boats, they use a considerable amount of hp to turn (around 60),Smitty

Re: Turbo 400 w TRS??

The MercTrans was discontinued in 1982 and was used only in lower hp TRS applications.
From 1983-1993 they ran a Borg Warner 71C on the 330 and up to some 420's. The stronger (and @1" longer) BW 72C was behind the 420 and up.

To answer your question, from 1983 to 1993 (last year for the TRS) they all ran either a BW 71C or a 72C.

My 82 Donzi has a Merctran/Trs setup. I had to have it rebuilt when I bought it. I had an extra clutch disc put in, and the shaft clearanced. I've heard of people getting good service with up to 650 hp with these mods. Here's what some of the pieces looked like before the rebuild.

Are you sure its not a two speed borg warner/powerglide set up?

Was that thing still spinning the prop ?

That's really where I was trying to go with this question.

Does the BW 71C look enough like a Turbo 400 with the valve body etc to be mistaken as one by a car guy who doesn't know what he's looking at in a boat?

Thanks

(I don't know what either look like, it was dark down there in my bilge and had lots of hoses on top of it)

Re: Turbo 400 w TRS??

Could possibly be an old B&M two speed. They were designed as a direct bolt-in for a Borg Warner.

Re: Turbo 400 w TRS??

More horsepower gets to the prop with the MercTrans than the Borg Warners. MercTrans only steals 6-10 hp where the BWs grab 18-22.
The BWs are heavier too.

the fmx trans and the turbo 4oo look nothing alike. the turbo 400 has a one piece bellhousing and transmission, The fmx has a seperate bell housing and transmission. Unless it was custom built I doubt that a 400 is in there

The Turbo 400 is one of the easiest transmissions to identify.
The shape of the pan is almost the shape of the state of Illinois, except backwards.
