Trim Tab Help
3 Attachment(s)
I have saved up enough money to buy some trim tabs for my boat. The boat had some Bennett Tabs that i trashed when I started the restore. I have run the boat for 2 without any tabs on it and I can't wait to drive it with some new Trick Marine Tabs. So, the question is what size and where would you mount them on the back of the boat?
Thanks 4 any help! Here are some pic of my boat |

Re: Trim Tab Help
I am no expert, but by the looks of your arneson steering ram you will have a major placement problem
On another note, i bought a single tunnel tab from Trick. He is the best to work worth and awesome on prices to boot. Good luck, and great looking boat too :drink: |
Re: Trim Tab Help
Fred at trick has some really nice units and set ups, best thing to do is give him a call and ask what is best for your set up !!!!! :drink:

Re: Trim Tab Help
Going to have to do some custom work on the steering arm mount. Fred is the only person that i would consider buying these from but I need to know if I want the 23' or 28' ???
Fred U ROCK! |
Re: Trim Tab Help
I think the 23" would be enough.
I had 150s on my 24 pantera and liked them. I guess you could always go bigger. Here is what I pulled off merc racing site: K-PLANES RECOMMENDATION CHART Model Boat Length 150S (New) 21 ft. (6.4m) to 30 ft. (9.1m) 280S (New) 31 ft. (9.4m) to 40 ft. (12.2m) 380S (New) 31 ft. (9.4m) to 40 ft. (12.2m) 450S 40 ft. (12.2m) and longer |

I have 280's on my 24 Superboat. I would recommend a similar size.

Re: Trim Tab Help
The 23's would be plenty, but I have customers running 28" on similar boats. It'll boil down to personal preference.
The steering ram is a definate problem right now. As for mounting position, I'd look at some photos of 24 Superboats, 24 Panteras, 24 Monzas etc. No need to reinvent the wheel. Fred |
Re: Trim Tab Help
Can they be mounted closer to the drive or is it better out on the edge?

Re: Trim Tab Help
Should i try to get them mounted on the flat part or is it ok to mount them they are on Dave M's boat????

I think you'll find Dave's mounting to be the most widely accepted location. There's more than one train of thought on mounting location, but my personal preferance is Daves. Here's a set of 28" tabs on an Extreme 29. |
Re: Trim Tab Help
Damn fred, those tabs sure look nice on that exteme!

Even in VERY rough water I usually don't have to run them much further than neutral. With big tabs on a relatively small boat you have to watch out for "bow steer" if you run them to far down. Is that swim platform under water when your boat is at rest? Looks pretty low? Mine's only a couple inches above the water. |
Re: Trim Tab Help
I would say that you could probably space the steering cylinder mount to the rear, but depending on how sturdy that it is maybe a new or beefed up mount could be in order.if you move it back toward the rear, you may have to move it toward the port side of the boat to compensate .I am right now Rigging the stern of My python and trim tab location is up in the air right now. Boat is looking good .

I had put a Latham single external steering ram on a 24' donzi. the k plane was in the way. Latham made a neat transom mount bracket that incorporated a arm and welded to it to clear the tab. My problem was the the rams offered were either to long or to short. THe custom bracket did the trick. If you move the mounting point I suggest reinforcing it from behind with wood and glass

Re: Trim Tab Help
The swim platform is just above the water when at rest. So, 23' or 28'??? what length are the 280 k planes?
