Intercoms------ Are they worth it??

New boat coming in late May or June. Thinking of adding integrated intercoms as an option. The boat will be used in about 4 to 6 poker runs a year max.

What have peoples experience been with these systems? "Is the Squeeze worth the juice?"

We have had them three years and they are great for poker runs. Keeps everyone in touch and communicating, and I think makes the run safer. We also have ours wired to the VHF which is the only way you can use it on a loud boat.

Re: Intercoms------ Are they worth it??

We use a portable one and I wouldn't use the boat without it if I have passengers. Also can hook it to the CD player or the MP3.

Ditto what Dock Holiday said. Would not do another poker run without one.

I had them installed on my new boat last year. Great for poker runs, or even when the noise is getting to you. Eliminates the shouting to communicate at any speed.

How do they work in non-sitdown boats?? Can you still hear each other in a stand-up bolster boat?? Will the headsets blow off?

They work great in my friends 42 Sonic. They don't move, sitting or standing.

Thanks. A 42 Sonic is bigger than what I was questioning. What if the headset is in the wind a little?

I bought a set of Revolutions with throat mikes from Trick Marine and am very pleased!!! Illiminates all noise except for the hummmmm of the motor. You can talk in your normal voice and be heard crystal clear. You'll use them more than just for poker runs.

*if* we keep the boat, these are on the buy list.

After using a set in the tres martin boat class i ordered a set for my boat. They are awesome

I would also recomend the Revolution Marine intercom. Had that setup on an open boat with little, (or no) wind protection. The throat mikes are great!

Re: Intercoms------ Are they worth it??

I used to open road race in a vert, full face helmet, and later instructed and I have these 2 person intercom mike set that used to work great inside helmets that I'm going to try out in the boat.
The set cost about $50 and I've used them 20 or so times in various race cars and convertibles at speed,w full face helmets and they worked great.
We also boat w helmets and goretex all winter, so we have alot of potential for use there all winter

I was using the Nady PMC 2 which I just checked, new on ebay under $60, but search for motorcycle intercoms, there are many

Im new to this, is there a system that you can listen to music and when you speak, does it shut off or quiet down or do you have to somewhat shout over the music to get your point across. I think its a great idea. Also in a 43-52' boat, can you get 6 of them and what is the approx cost. Thanks Jeff

Doesn't anyone make a wireless or Bluetooth system?

Wardey 03-16-2006 07:20 AM

Re: Intercoms------ Are they worth it??

Got them in the race boat and a (4) set in the pleasure boat. Would never have another boat without them !!! The pleasure boat has the Racing Comm. and I have the stereo pumped through them. NO wind noise and NO screaming back and forth.....or at least when my wifes not with me.....but anyhow they are GREAT !!! We have the VHF plugged into the race boat. Dave

Re: Intercoms------ Are they worth it??

Yes, there are wireless sytems available but just for communicating person to person in the boat. Dave

1. Yes
2. Yes (example sigtronics Music Inputs
The ST-440 and ST-640 accept input from a CD player, cassette player, AM / FM stereo receiver or Walkman. Music is muted when the VHF / Comm is transmitting or receiving, or when speaking on the intercom. Passengers can also be put on uninterrupted music if they desire.
3. Yes
4. depends on which one you buy. Aircraft system will be cheaper probably than the mark up on a marine system.

Re: Intercoms------ Are they worth it??

The motorcycle units I was mentioning are in helmet style only, I doubt they work out in the wind.

My only issue with the hard mounted headsets I've seen is it looks like they add clutter to the cockpit.

are there any that look like cell phone ear pieces in size? or are they all full on headsets?

E

Re: Intercoms------ Are they worth it??

Another vote for Revolution Marine. Have them in our 26' Daytona. Four place set-up. Two boom mics front and throat mics for the rear. Have stereo wired in as well as the factory Merc warning system. We boat in the 50's sometimes and these REALLY help with the cold. On long poker runs they are indispensible. Normal days at the lake they stay in the truck.

Well worth the $$$.

I use the Revolution Marine system with throat mics, VHF interface and dual engine alarms. Mics are always hot and no voice clipping or wind noise.

I have a aviation set up use them all the time with the wife along.....(Dry Stacks Rock) they are alot cheaper I think about $400 for a 4 place with 2 head sets.

Re: Intercoms------ Are they worth it??

I have a six person intercom in the boat and use it all the time.. Great for poker runs and ocean boating. For casual boating at Havasu I'd say the intercom isn't as useful, but for ocean boating and/or poker runs then the intercom is definitely worth it.

Hi from Ireland and Happy St. Patrick's Day ! :D

Over here the wind and wave on the Atlantic Coast 50 miles offshore at speed can be quite severe so we use Gecko helmets with visors and intercom.

The Skippers mike has priority as he / she also operates the VHF. Any VHF call has priority over intercom naturally !

Kind regards,

Stuart

Wardey - The wireless ones sound interesting as I am only interested in person to person. Can you supply information on vendors?

Stuart - Where did you get those from? Are they always on units or do they have a press to talk button?

Thanks,
