Best diesel power to weight ratio in a large sport boat
After checking the Hustler 50 at the Miami show I was extremely impressed. I'm back on the diesel bandwagon. Hustler did an impressive job and had all the basis covered. The article in Poker Runs America was also impressive, very informative and detailed, Joe has done his homework. The amount of reliable hours and excellent fuel economy is what I am now after. Speed of no less than 85mph top end and 70mph cruise is what I'm trying to achieve. I am presently looking at either Nortech or Hustler to build my next boat with Diesels and surface drives. These are the only 2 boat co.'s to meet my requirements for headroom, and space desired. The 4300 Nortech is actually perfect, and prefer it over the 444 Hustler but engine compartment wont hold 3/480hp Yans. The 50 Hustler is much smaller than the 52' Nortech, or appears to be when looking at them.
My question is who builds the best Diesels, Yanmar seems to have the best power to weight ratio but what about some of the others, Like Cummins, Sea-tek, Volvo, Cat and so on.... I prefer a trip or quad application. I am only interested in surface drives, no bravo drives applications. Thanks for the help. Jeff

Don't know about now, but the big Sea-Teks used to need just as many mechanic hours as big gas blower motors.
You shouldn't take for granted that all Diesels are "reliable" just because they are diesels.

Yanmar hands down.I ran the **** out of a little 315 Yanmar and put 5000 hours on it with most of them hard hours and it held up well, and the 315 is a light duty motor. The 485 is the real deal should get over 5000 hours like nothing .
