Why would Anyone
Last week while in Florida I was able to stop into Hideway Marine in Pompano Beach, Florida. They had a boat for sale that caught my eye, so I decided to talk to a salesman. After making some small talk about the boat I was interested in, the salesman finally asked what type of boat do I own now.
When I told him that I owned a 2001 358 Sonic he lost interest in the sale. I asked him if he would be interested to take my boat in for a trade. He told me that he could not take my boat in on trade because the boat I was looking at was a brokered boat. That much I could understand. Then he countinued to say my boat was TOO SMALL, TOO SLOW ( 82 mph ) and not suitable for Florida waters. He continued to say that Hideaway is not interested in a boat unless it does 90 PLUS MPH. So the question IS, If you are looking to purchase a new boat that is going to have a 6 figure asking price, why would you ever want to deal with a dealer, who consider's your current boat as a PIECE of S--T? |
Re: Why would Anyone

Re: Why would Anyone
some dealers only like to deal with higher end stuff. they may have limited room. Im not surprised they didnt take it on trade personally, but should have helped find someway to work ou a deal. Check out aqua toy store and fastboats.com in that area also. they may be more helpful, both offered me good trade in value on my "slow" 70 mph boat.

He could have said, "we dont want to take your boat on trade because it does not fit our target customers needs" However he chose to say(insult a prospective customer), your boats "too small, not fast enough and not suitable for south Florida waters" Kinda makes him sound a bit arrogant and uninformed to say the least. Using his logic Sonic should close their doors because they are building the wrong boats for their market. It wouldnt surprise me if he didnt have many contacts to be creative about the deal. :drink: |
Re: Why would Anyone
I do agree that some dealers only like to deal with certain brands and models but, my Sonic sure would look nice next too all the Baja's and 28' Sunsations.
I was not trying to ask for a trade in on a 21' Bayliner. |

Re: Why would Anyone
Yes, its difficult to find someone with a BROKERED boat to talk to you about a trade. Got something to do with economics, some companies need to make a profit to stay in business. However, he could have been a bit more polite, explained how it works. After all, if you sold your boat to a private party you could have come back and bought his brokered boat, if he hadn't shot himself in the foot.
Q: Is a boat on consignment considered a brokered boat? |
Re: Why would Anyone
SOME dealers are scum, I called Mark Miller at Miller Marine in Norfolk VA today about buying a pontoon boat that I wanted to use for work in my marina,he told the boat was in good shape except for a small rivit hole that I could patch. so I drove 2hrs to see the boat, when I got there I looked at the hull from 10 feet away I could see alot of corotion ,I got on the ground and saw patches and holes. WHAT A SCUMBAG!!! Thing is he' gona stick some poor sole with this boat!! A pressure washer would have blown holes I could stick my arm in.

Re: Why would Anyone
Hey Wrink,
If I were too loose weight in my boat to make it faster, where would I put my engines? You know having TWEEKED 500 EFI'S are just not enough POWER for some. Even for those dealers that are trying to sell someone a boat in their inventory that has 496's. GET MY POINT!! |

I just received a phone call from the owner of Hideaway who is interested in knowing who exactly this salesperson was so it can be dealt with accordingly. I see that this question has been asked several times with no answer. He also extended an invitation to call him directly if you are interested in purchasing a boat or to discuss your bad experience. His name is Pierre and he can be reached at Hideaways main office or you can e-mail me and he told me I can give you his cell phone number. |
Re: Why would Anyone
I've personally purchased 2 boats from Hideaway, a 50 Hustler and a 30 Scarab Sport, within the last year and have been very pleased with all aspects of the deal. Pierre is a straight up guy and I'm sure he'll get it dealt with.

Re: Why would Anyone
Thanks for all the replies. The owner of Hideaway sent me a email and would be more than happy to talk about the situtation. In all due respect it was never my intention to single out the indivdual that I talked with. The only point that I was trying to establish was, what many of us encounter when considering a new boat. That many dealer's are more than egar to sell you a new boat, but truely turn a deaf year when it comes to trade in.
Let's all remember that every new boat will someday be a used boat ( 5 minutes after signing on the dotted line ). No real hard feeling's here just a little frustration with another BOATING incident. |
Re: Why would Anyone
That's Ok Drag. When I was shopping last year. I was insulted at a boat show when the sales guy said the boat I owned was junk  and he acted as if I couldn't afford what I was looking at  So I bought something else and sent him a picture of my boat and nice letter :D
