The time has finally come for Shore.
I'm looking at buying a 88 Chapparal Villian 30' tommorrow afternoon. No more Bayliner jokes please.. :evilb:
Anyways,..You guys fill me in on what to look at on this tub. Twin 454's/B1's on a triple aluminum..Nice boat good shape and I can afford it outright so i'm gonna bite. Another issue is my tow vehicle..Umm...yes..Umm...I know it's under-rated ro this wieght but all I have to two with is my 1999 Denali 5.7 ..3:73's and it is 4wd not all-wheel.She runs and shifts well and has zero issue with 4000+lbs of Bayliner BUT I am kinda nervous with the Chappy. I'm estimating 8500lbs on the trailer.:( Good news is I live about 2 miles from the ramp with no hills...Maybe a 3-4 trips a year at 50 miles with no hills and good launch ramps at both...I'm gonna go pick her up with my buddy and his F250 SD.The boat is a couple hundred miles away. Am I gonna kill this thing or anything else even trying to tow this boat?...I'm rather excited so let me know if I am making a bad choice or if these Chappy's are crapp..I won't be pissed if ya tell me to steer clear but i WILL be pissed if you tell me later to avoid it like the plague.. :D |
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
They are nice boats. Is that the Villian II? Welcome back!! :drink:
PM Byrdman here on the board. He'll let you know if you're an idiot or not for towing with the Denali! :D :D |
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
I know I know..I read that disaster of a thread...But seriously.Am I making a mistake or is this a good damn boat to jump up to..Motors are just over 100hrs and the drives are very nice. They won't trim up but I really can't let that deter me.They trim down but won't button back up.I'm sure I can jump the solenoid and at least get them high enough to bring her home and fiddle.

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
I'm not sure on the Villan # yet as a 89 is a IV..Not sure how they name them..That's why I ask bro.. :D

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Make sure you check the transom and stringers for rot. I've seen a few with soft transoms.
|
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
That I will do for sure...This has been on trailer for 2 years...hence the drive/trim issue.
The guys seems straight and seems to just not have time to play with it..he is moving to Tenn and doesn't see dragging it up there so my gain..Any tricks on checking the transom and stringers that I should know? |

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Had a buddy that had the 19' Villian. Very nice boat. Another friend had the 22'Villian. I forget the I, II, or III disignation on them. The 22' was my 1st time in a BB boat. I thought that was the chits then! Both where great boats, but considerably smaller than what you are looking at and also just single motors. Since your buddy has a 250 and you only plan on towing a few times per yr. might consider that as a tow option. I have no opinion on your vehicle itself. Just not familar with them.
Good luck! |
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Hey Shore, welcome back
As far as towing with the Denalli, go for it. You aren't that much over. Get a wieght didtributing hitch. That will help a lot. Some recevers show a 1000 lb additional towing capacity with it. |
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Pulled our Formula 311 (10-11K#) with a '99 Escalade, same as the Denali.. Would not recommend that for regular towing duty. Just went back and forth to ramp 4mi or so each way. Probably did that 20 times? Wouldn't/didn't pull any farther. Also had to use 4Lo to get up ramp. Now using F250SD 4x4 Powerstroke - much better, (although the wife doesn't think so :D ). Just make sure, whatever you use, it's capable of stopping the load.

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
My local ramp is right down the street..The St Johns ramp is about 45 miles away but this would only happen a few times a year and even then we would have all the time in the world...The guy that owns it used an H2 the last time and it was overkill...Another owner was using a 90 dually and says that is waaaay plenty to tow.

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Hey Shore,, Welcome back,, The Denali will do just fine ,, make sure the trailor brakes work,,, we do about 150-175 miles each way with a 34 foot cat ,, about 9000lbs all summer long ,, no problems ,,, just make sure ya can stop it all !!!! Good luck ,,

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Looks great, solid boats if the transom is ok. Rubber mallet and have at it listening for different sounds. Congrats.

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Thx guys, We are gonna leave her in a bit and check it out..if all goes good then we'll bring her back.. :D
|
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Shor....it will be good to have you back.
Pay a few extra bucks and get it surveyed to make sure the hull and transom are sound. No matter how nice a guy the seller is he may not know weather there is any moisture damage. Good luck. :drink: |
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Towing, umkay.
Launching umkay... Recovering.... that's gonna be a good show. Be sure to get a picture if the boat pulls the truck in the drink. :D |
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
No up trim probably is simple fix. First check fuse/s; then /clean/remove/replace the solenoids and associated connections.
In 2-4 miles you could tow it with a Volkswagon. Not really. Problem is will the Denali pull it out of the water at the of the day. May not be an issue with 4wd in low gear and just ease out. Other than that, how well balanced the trailer setup is, and the tow capacity/class of the hitch for short runs. Just get comfortable and run it further down the road. Trailers coming detached form the tow vehicle going down the road is an ugly sight. |
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
good boat, buddy use to have a Villain II 22' and we use to beat the crap out of that thing. SBC 330hp Tempest. That thing would haul the mail. The first powerful boat I was ever in. That is the boat that got me out of my sea ray to buy my scarab. I don't know about the 30" Villain IV, but the 22' was a fast hull. I don't know who layed them up but fast.
I am looking for a Villain II right now for inland lakes. |
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Be sure to check the stringers and transom.
|
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Shore.....With the curved windshield and the integrated swim platform those Villians have aged pretty well.....get it surveyed, see if you can get the trim working and take it for a rip........when a boat gets that old it matters less and less what make it is........its how its been taken care of !!........are they 330s??

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Dude... I pulled a 24 Fountain CS with a 99 Denali and it was HORRIBLE!!! 50 miles will sway your azz all over the place..... My boat weighed about half as much as yours and it was a BEAR to pull out of the water!!!!! The azz end will hang down so low it will scrape! Mine was a complete mess.
Your boat will be heavier than 8500. My 29 beak with a single weight about 7500-8000 loaded up. I bet your boat weighs about 10K loaded. My neighbor had a 24 Villain in VA with a 454 and it was the chit! I love the looks of those... they remind me of a Pachanga  |

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Boat was a Pile....to put it nicely.
1st off the fact that the drives wouldn't trim up was so far down the list of troubles...Lets see the engine hatch was open as was the water jackects that were literally rotted opff the manifold on the starboard and the entire front portion of the port manifold was dust....What an *******..somehow he musta forgot to tell me that part. In short there was no way this boat needed anything short of pulling and going through both engines..If I had a baseball bat I would've made him an offer...as it was i wouldn't have taken on this project to save my life..so the journey continues.. |

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
I agree Shore.......at least put some light truck tires on it if your going to tow......those oversized pass car baloons they put on ride nice but flex all over the place with a load on...............doug

Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Well I just brought homea 1995 Crownline 250CR..5.7 BII..great shape and sittin on a new tandem aluminum.(way too long though)The truck pulled it home from lake george easily about 60 miles or so..I was on the fence of either a cruiser or a sportboat...This has AC and all so I'm gonna give her a run and see what goes..Plus a wicked good deal.lol.
I do have 22's on the Denali ironically enough.. :evilb: http://www.ls1camaro.net/freehosting/denali.JPG |
Re: The time has finally come for Shore.
Thx Trout, I spent several hours today clearing up issues the previuos owner neglected to do..found some wet wood in the aft cabin but it is a small divider piece that seems to be isolated....Two bilges in the compartment and neither worked..lol.I got one wired right and the other is just poop..
Lot of shiate on these big tubs..Scrubbin down the inside to my tastes.I'm a little anal when it comes to clean... :evilb: Neighbors are looking funny at me..again. :evilb: .The friggin thing is up against my garage door and almost to the street...I'm gonna hit it her with the buffer tomm...gonna look brand new...sortof :drink: |
