Dangers of Tunnel Tab on 36 Spectre Cat?
I've been recently reading a lot of post stating that a tunnel tab is dangerous on cats, Why?(I have a 36 spectre I recently bought). So how can I prevent anything from going wrong?
It seems to me that my boat would have a tough time coming out of the water without it, so am I supposed to bring it up to level with the tunnel or higher once I get on plane? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also where should my drives be set when driving? at neutral? Thanks |

You should talk to tres martin his class spent quite a bit of time talking about the tabs and the dangers involved with them.

Never used mine at high speeds just to get through sloopy stuff. Worked great. As for high speed, never. That could bring a stuff real fast.

A compression flap will help lift the rear of the boat at high speeds and help compress the air better to get out of the hole. in rough conditions it could lift the rear of the boat too much and cause a the bow to stuff.

The primary problem with tunnel tabs occurs at high speed. It's pretty basic actually. If you have your cat aired out at top speed and assuming your boat has been setup properly, you're not going to have much skag in the water for steering/control should you encounter a little wave action, crosswind, etc. Now, you jack the tunnel tab down for a little more speed. When you do this you are basically increasing the compresson in the tunnel to raise the boat a little more out of the water for less drag. But then, bingo, you've just lost almost all steering/control. Okay if conditions don't change and you are going straight - but let a little crosswind hit you and all of a sudden you will be overcorrecting using thrust from the propellers - not your skags. Then, all of a sudden the crosswind stops and maybe you hit a little roller - now you instinctively pull off the throttles but guess what - you have no steering because you have been using thrust from your props to steer and not the skags. At this point, unless you have more power and rpms to drive out of your grave situation, you're just along for the ride of your life - literally! Bottom line, I wouldn't recommend anyone use a tunnel tab on their pleasure cat. The last 3mph just isn't worth it. :drink:
