help with estimate of top speed

how fast do you think my 32 skater will run??
1000hp supercharged engines #4 drives 1.31 ratio with 34 pitch 4 blades i want to see 135mph do you think that is possible. want to turn engine between 6500 to 7000 rpm. thanks to the members of offshore only for the help!!!!!! :D

Scooter 02-01-2002 04:19 PM

Have a friend that has same ratio and pitch with 502 crates just carbs 36'awasome cat and he runs 112mph 5800rpm so you should see it go man go

36spectre 02-01-2002 04:23 PM

My 36 foot cat with a pair of 1000's, number VI dry sumps with 1:33 gears and 17 1/2 35, 5 blades, runs 153 on GPS. Yours should easily run in the high 130's. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Scooter 02-01-2002 04:25 PM

he is difinitly spinning those boys hard
but it takes alittle while to get there depending on the wind to lift the tunnel up

Scooter 02-01-2002 04:29 PM

Otto those five blades arn't cheap, do you think there wroth the money compared to the 4 blades I have 17 1/2 29 #5 drives how much slip do you lose by changing? nice ride

36spectre 02-01-2002 04:32 PM

They really only changed two things,Vibration and handling(handles like it's on rails).

36spectre 02-01-2002 04:33 PM

And yes they were worth it!!

Scooter 02-01-2002 04:35 PM

Thanks Otto i heard they reduce slipage buy 7-8% is that true

36spectre 02-01-2002 04:37 PM

If the boat is already hooked up with the 4 Blades then 6-8 % is rather optimistic.

tomcat 02-01-2002 07:31 PM

Hey Merlin540 - Using your hull and a pair of 900SC in my power vs. speed program I get 145 mph with that pitch and ratio. Assuming ideal slip of 5%, that would happen at 6000 RPM.

There have been a few 32s built with 800SC, but it seems to me they were often quickly traded in by their owners for 36 Skaters. Wasn't there a 32 in a magazine last year with 1000+ HP going 150? Scary.

If you could send me more info on weight, engine specs and speed with original engines and props, I could fine tune my prediction.

Wicked ride man! :D

merlin540 02-01-2002 11:31 PM

tomcat here is the scoop. i bought the boat with 600 hp small blocks. single carb <1150 dom> it had 1.68 ratio big shaft #4s and it had 17 1/2 by 30 3 blade props. it ran 107 on gps and radar at 7800 rpm every time. engines that are going in the boat are my old 540's punched to 565's 1271 blowers w/superchillers with 12psi boost mech roller w/shaft rocker system. coated pistons on the skirt and dome also cyl head and valves coated. has daytona crash boxes and 1.31 ratio drives now. i have both 3 and 4 blades props from ratio 30 to 34 pitch. the engine will run 7000 rpm if needed. this will be a killer poker run boat you can see pics of the boat at www.hadleyperformancemarine.com
this boat is the replacement for my eliminator that i wrecked over the summer. also its on stadoff boxes and the propshaft is 3" above the bottom of the boat. see ya :D

merlin540 02-01-2002 11:33 PM

also boat with small blocks weighed 6200lb totally rigged with 100gallons of fuel see ya

One Bad Cat 02-01-2002 11:41 PM

Killer Boat. Are you Joe Mamas friend...
If you are, Im the guy that sold him his Cat...

JIMKID Motorsports 02-02-2002 09:09 AM

Hay 540 now 565 or beeter I think in the last power boat mag they have a new style 32 with 575s running 123 no brainer you should easilly see 130 just be carfull poker runs get pretty rough water for that boat good luck and try to keep those rpms down those biger motors dont like them

HydroScream 02-02-2002 09:44 AM

sick, sick ride....
Just in calculating your gear ratio, rpm and prop pitch it looks likt @0% slip you would run between 160 and 170 depending on rpm   Factor in some slip and I'd say you would be running 145 to 150.... as said before, I think 135 is a no brainer

nice boat man, be careful

merlin540 02-02-2002 09:55 AM

yes i am joemama's friend. ;)

One Bad Cat 02-02-2002 02:31 PM

Merlin, Your the guy that had the De-Laminator, and the American Offshore. Mama told me about your toys.. Awesome. That Skater ..Using my formula @ 6500 RPMs and 34 pitch and 10% slip. which I know is high. =145 MPH + That boat will be on a rail. Ive been in a 2000 36 Skater with 1200 hp and was blown away with the handling and performance.. Felt very solid at 150 +
Tell Mama I said hello.

tomcat 02-02-2002 04:56 PM

Merlin540 - Check your email for new graph.

Bruce 02-02-2002 07:36 PM

Merlin, where the original engines moved forward and using jackshaft's, or are they back in standard location. If the engines need to turn that hard I'd say you've got to much prop. It's a good starting point, hopefully you are turning the props out. Rigged like it is the boat won't want much positive trim, I'd run it up with the drives neutral trim and let the hull lift. Watch the turns at higher speed, the 32's can get exciting. The boat will probably not like the three blades unless the engines are forward. Have fun, be safe.

BLOWN 1100 02-02-2002 08:18 PM

Merlin
Here in a formula that will help ,it is as accurate as you can get without testing the boat.
(RPM Divided by gear ratio x prop pitch divided by 1056 and subtract slipage. 10% is a good # for a Skater.
Hope this helps
Loy ;)

sean stinson 02-03-2002 11:21 PM

with 7% slip factor and the info you gave
@ 7000 rpm = 160 mph best case
@ 6500 rpm = 148 mph best case

merlin540 02-05-2002 03:01 PM

bruce the engine are on jackshafts and i have all 3 sets to change position also the gear ratio is 1.33 not 1.31 it didnt want positive trim with small blocks and i dont think it would anyway. boat will be out of the paint shop in 2 weeks and then the fun begins RIGGING the engines will be dyno'ed soon and i will post the outcome of that. also at the same time i am working on this mess i am rerigging my 31 american offshore. its getting boxes an 2" short drives and engines are getting freshing up. i hope it picks up speed also what do you guys on oso think about the expected speed of that one also the best it ever ran was 115 on gps at 5900 rpm 32pitch hydro4blades see ya :D

Bruce 02-05-2002 05:15 PM

Merlin I would consult with Skater on the location of the big blocks. I think they should be moved back some. Peter Hedlin will help you if you give him the opportunity. The 32's are very sensitive to CG, your adding alot of weight vs. the small blocks.

KiloKat 02-05-2002 05:47 PM

Merlin - the original setup running 107 @ 7800 rpm results in a slip factor of +-20%. Placement of new engines will be critical for proper CG and proper drive height with 4 blades will definately reduce slip. Assuming you get to +-10% which is realistic, the boat should run approx 143 @ 6500.

Good luck and be careful - sounds like an awesomw ride!

shawn 02-05-2002 08:50 PM

Hey Charlie, seems like the Agitator will be back and strong. good luck, would like to see pix after the paint shop

ViciousOne 02-06-2002 12:35 AM

I come up with 152 mph at 12% slip at 7000 rpm thats alot of rpm!!!!!!!!

skater 02-06-2002 11:14 PM

Merlin ,
As we discussed before , below is the specs on my 32 SKATER....

32 Skater with # 5 drives
on standoff boxes
1.50 gear ratio
Huber 1330 trans
Twin 900 HP , 500 cu in blower motors
17 1/2 x 34 4 blade labbed props
in race conditions
7200-7300 RPM = 135 MPH ( RADAR )

With true 1000 HP per side your boat should run 140 ...

Good luck with everything , keep us informed....... Skater ( MARK H. )

NICKSLICK 02-07-2002 01:42 AM

Hey man... be careful out there...

ya know...

:(  :o   :)

FASTCATS 02-07-2002 08:49 AM

Hey Merlin,

How's my AO doing up there, you need to get it back together and go out there an practice on your "shark turns"

Good luck on the skater, be carefull!!!!

Bruce 02-07-2002 11:28 AM

Skater, are your engines forward on jack shafts or back in standard location and what is the X dimension or propshaft location? Thanks.

Dueclaws 02-07-2002 06:55 PM

Skater-
Your props turning in or out?

merlin540 02-07-2002 08:28 PM

mine are turning out ;)

skater 02-07-2002 11:55 PM

My props were turning OUT. The motors were moved as far forward as possible on the boat ..Top blower pulley was hidden under the deck when you lifted the hatches... Not sure on prop height though . We never messed with that ...
