Re: what type of fuel pump r u running on your 1000+ hp engines
I only run an electric pump. I would rather have a engine shut off if the pump fails then to trust a series of pumps ie: mechanical and electric togetother. I am not convinced dead heading and mechanical pumps belong on a 1000+ hp. I run a Pro-Star 500 with a return line. The regulator is on the return line. Constant cool fuel pressure on the carbs. The engine will burn 75 gph and the pump will flow 500 gph. Blowers enignes need overkill in the fuel department. Big pumps, big fuel lines, big fuel rail, high flow filters, big regulator and a return line.

Re: what type of fuel pump r u running on your 1000+ hp engines
At this level I would run one or the other, a big mechanical or an electric and always with return lines, but that's just me.
For our new 1000+hp blown Cat motors we already happened to have a pair of Big Aeromtive electric pumps with returns that each feed a pair of Quick Fuel P-1050cfm dominator's. |

I have run several sets of 900's and 1000's with only a mech. pump with no problems. BG make one that is limited to 7 psi so you don't have to have return line. You may also want to check out www.racepumps.com

Re: what type of fuel pump r u running on your 1000+ hp engines
Ratman CP performance sells a TEE fitting that goes in the tank Filler hose. This is for your return lines.
Remember your smallest diamiter is your weakest link. I would not run anything over 1000 hp without returns. Put the return regulator after the carbs. I always measure the lenth of time it takes to fill a gallon container. This is done at the carbs. My Hustler would fill a gallon container in 7 seconds. You want atleast 250gph pumps You can get all the fancy pumps and tees and filters ya want just make sure it passes the above test. Gerry |
Re: what type of fuel pump r u running on your 1000+ hp engines
One thing that has never been explained to me. Why run a mechnical pump at all? Best answer "it is a backup". I mean how often does an electric pump fail? It my understanding a mechanical pump must be dead headed. You lose the electric pump with a parallel setup (mech and elect) with a return line you might lose the engine as well. I would rather have the engine shutoff if I ever lose an electric pump.

Last year I was running a mechanical pump only with 4-5 lbs of fuel press, it was too low for my comfort zone. With the old setup I had 4-5 lbs at idle, now I have 8.5 lbs at idle. When I get the boat in the water I'm going to set it up to run 8-9 lbs at WOT. |
