Is anyone using Gibson Turn Down Tips WITH mufflers?
I understand that they can be used with a muffler insert as well. Is anyone using them and what were your results?
The turn-down tips at idle benefit is great, but they are straight pipes and just as loud once you are on plane, and will fail the DB test in NH/MA.
Wanted to see if anyone was using them and how. I heard that angling each of the tips outboard reduces the noise level on plane as well ---true?

I think Kilo Cat has something similiar to this. I agree that an insert is best. however even with just the turn down it will be noticeable queiter than without anything do to the fact that you know have a foot or more of wet exhaust. Randy ran the plain turn downs on a 42 MTI with 1075's for a while last yr and it seemed very quiet in the boat at speed.

Thanks for the input. I thought mufflers in these would be overkill, but not sure.

Re: Is anyone using Gibson Turn Down Tips WITH mufflers?
I'm running a 509 cid engine with Keith Eickert manifolds and GGB mufflers....
At Idle I was at 94 db and you could not carry on a conversation in the boat pretty much at any time with the engine running, not to mention our 86db noise limit at idle.
I had GGB make me a set of clamp on downtubes and am now at 82 db at idle.
Once the boat is on plane you can hear the exhaust pretty good though the interior resonance is much lower so you can actually talk to the passengers while underway. The exhaust also has more of a "tuned" sound to it now as opposed to just an "open" exhaust sound...

Doug would you happen to have any pictures. I am running GGB's today and this sounds really interesting. How huge are the clamp-on down tubes?
Was this custom for you? Didn't realize GGB made these.

Here is a link to my db results and a short video of it running in the driveway...muffler results....
pic 1
pic 2
They were a bit longer when I got them....I just cut them down some but I may go a bit further to get a little more sound at idle....
The only problem is that I think GGB is out of business.......

Thanks very much for that. I think you're right about GGB. That's why I was asking about Gibson.
