I look at it just like putting your seat belt on in the car.
EVERYTIME
I bet this guy wished he was wearing is also!
Funny how trees really distroy fiberglass!

Seatbelts and life jackets most directly protect you and the occupants of the said vehicle/boat.
The kill switch/safety lanyards protect EVERYONE. You can correlate the habit with putting on the seatbelt as in religeously, but the safety benefit is radically different.
Its virtually the same as a particular Virginia driving law; such that when its raining to the point that your windshield wipers are on, your headlights need to be on; by law. This is not so the operator of said car can see better, its so others in the vicinity can improve their chances of seeing the said car better; thus improving their own safety.

How about the VA law that limits speed to 65 on the road. You adhere to that too?

MY feeling is a lanyard is appropiate if your are on a run or going to be running a speed. There are many times we use our boat and don't always run at speed. As for seat belts I where one know only because it is the law and the stats say it saves lives but I would be dead today if I wore one on a summer day in 1992 when I was t-boned by a 18 wheeler that ran a red light at 65 mph drove me 1/2 mile down the road and pushed me into the bay Thank god for low tide the medics woke me up chest high water in the cab Drivers door pushed to tanny hump if restrained I would be dead. Sysco foods to be exact bastards lawerys ate us alive but thats another thred I am sure. So I guess I use them don't like them but at high speeds use them both!
