Peekskill NY boating

I have to deliver a motorcycle to NY sometime in the next month. Looks like it's just north of NYC.

Thinking if I have to drive 500+ miles to the east coast I may just drag the boat along to make the trip worthwhile.

How is boating on the Hudson river? What's a good area around there? I see the big Poker Run in NYC mid month but the 700 dollar entry fee is kind of discouraging for me. Looks like fun though.

Any suggestions? I did this for our Lake Norman trip and got LOTS of help. Thought I'd try it again.

Thanks in advance!
Mark

Re: Peekskill NY boating

The poker run weekend would be a good time to be on the river, even if you dont want to participate in the Poker run, it's still fun to run down to liberty landing marina to check out all the hardware and then run up to the Tappan Zee bridge before the start and watch all the boats come by. You can launch from Peekskill, run south to the harlem river take the scenic tour past yankee stadium out the east river and across to the statue of liberty. or run out to the L.I. sound. Depending on how far you want to go, you could launch from Peekskill and head North up to West Point and further on to the Newburgh water-front for some real nice dining. lots of options, depends on what your looking for..

Thanks for the good info!
We aren't real crazy about the big citys... would be a sight to see from the water tho.
We kinda like little waterfront bars with live music and docks. Running north may be more our country a$$ speed :D

Are there many no wake zones or can you run fast on the river?

Re: Peekskill NY boating

There aren't any no wake zones,, just within 100 feet of shore.

Newburgh has about the best night life on the river. you have Gully's restaurant and bar, w/ live bands, along with several really nice restaurants, bars and clubs along the water front. It's approx. 15 miles North of peekskill launch, docking would be at Gully's, Front St, or Torches Marina. Gully's and Torches do not charge, Front St. does.

If there is room it's best to park on the north side of gully's, just yell accross to us when you get there.. :D Then you can walk along the water-front to the bars and clubs.

Re: Peekskill NY boating

Chris covered it pretty good.
There are no speed restrictions on the river. Im going to guestimate that Newburgh is about 60 miles south of Newburgh so when your country azz comes over you have to go both places. Not many get to see NYC from the water and if your not into big city's than its really a fun way to see it :drink:
There are about 10 active OSO members that regularly run the river in that area so make sure you give a heads up when your coming out.
NYC Poker Run is one of the biggest in the country. There is an ongoing battle for the king of the Hudson so if you want to spectate, there are some serious fast boats balz out. Highly recommend you try to schedule your delivery during the run.
Let us know

By boat:

Peekskill, South to Manhattan = approx. 35 miles.

Peekskill, North to Newburgh = approx. 15 miles.

Re: Peekskill NY boating

You can launch from peekskill, they have a very nice ramp,, a 30 footer is no problem at all..

North you have transients slips at Front St. marina in Newburgh, South I would assume Liberty Landing Marina not sure..

List and directions to ramps.. http://www.hrfanj.org/ramps.htm#Peek...0Launch%20Ramp

Re: Peekskill NY boating

Leaning that way... figure since I'm there... I'll prolly never go back again so...
Kind of have a date with some Lake Erie friends Saturday but I'll see them all the following weekend at the Sandusky Bay run.
Figure if the weather is good. Crash in a no tell motel in peekskille thursday night after dropping off the bike and splash the boat friday am, sounds like friday night at Gullys/newberg? Some place we can boat to and see a band playing out on the patio. If it gets "drunk out" can we just crash at their docks claiming they got me too drunk to drive home? Maybe get a trans dock at front street.
Then Saturday am blast down to watch the PR guys and see the NYC sights by boat... don't wanna step ashore there  skeered of them city slickers...

Or go to NYC Friday afternoon and check that all out then... I'd prolly get a better look at the hardware then. Like to see those HORBA guys. Will we be able to pull into Liberty Landing for a few minutes to visit?

I don't have to be back to work until WED morning so... I can stay as long as I can afford. (about an hour and a half) or as long as the weather is good.

Re: Peekskill NY boating

If the weather is nice, i'm sure I will be at Gully's marina Friday night, then leave for the city around 8:30 am saturday for liberty landing marina. Dock at LLM for a bit to see all the boats and then head back north to T.Z. bridge to see the king of the hudson and all the other boats come by.

We usually try to get a bunch of boats together, leave Gully's in the morning and all head down together, your more than welcome to join us. If you happen to get tied up on the north side of Gully's you can stay there for the night no problem, or there are usually a few empty slips in Gullys marina you could use for the night near us..

Thanks Chris, sounds like the plan! :drink: weather permitting.

Re: Peekskill NY boating

I hear you there.. My boat was at the dealer all winter, the weather got sunny and warm, I got the boat back and it's been cold and rainy for a solid week since.

Someone usually starts a thread the week before the NYC poker run, see who's meeting at Gully's and who's meeting up at places in between, as well as keep track of the weather.

I had my boat at the Washington Irving marina just under the Tappan Zee Bridge for many years.
Its a great place to hang and it located in the middle of everything.
Nice ride to NYC or go up state to Cold springs, both nice rides.
