Trailering Question for NYC

Thinking about towing the boat thru the Lincoln tunnel to Liberty State Park and avoiding the GW bridge. Is there any issue with trailering a 33ft boat with an Excursion thru the Lincoln tunnel?? Has anyone done it before. Is this set up too long to stay in your lane and not be able to made a wide turn thru the curves without the trailer going into the oncoming lane??

Re: Trailering Question for NYC

You should be fine the curves are real gentle.

It's permissible, but why? Personally I wouldn't trust the person in the lane next to me.

Make sure your not over the legal width, had a buddy get in some chit for towing a ten foot wide boat thru the tunnel.

You should be fine...as I remember, trucks can go through there also. You are under the legal (width) limit. I don't know about lenght limit.

Its not as much a legal question as a manuver question. Ive never been thru there and just dont want to have a problem. Its way more convenient then going up to the GW to then travel back South again on the turnpike.

I don't think it will be so bad once your in the tunnel. The problem I see is before you enter. There is so much traffic trying to get in the entrance -NYC side- (all entrances) you would have to be real careful. If your going to do it, go at an off time.

Active, run west outta Debs inlet, and take a nice wide turn to starboard after brooklyn.
This should get you running north under the Verranzano.
LSP is on the left.
Thats the easiest (and most fun) way i can think of getting the boat there. :D :D :D

Re: Trailering Question for NYC

as said previously its the bulk of traffic (and azzholes) that make towing in the city a real hassle just pick a good time and you should be ok good luck

I agree with Storm it's probably easier to just run it.

Re: Trailering Question for NYC

Im not going to run it. Due to the times and abuse, I just want to tralier to Liberty State Park and its closest from L.I. to go over the Manhattan Bridge, cross Canal St thru the Lincoln Tunnel than going from the south shore of L.I. up to the GW, back south down the tpke.

Casino,
You are correct. Thats what I meant. Actually I can go either way. Midtown Tunnel or Lincoln. Either way is closer the GW Bridge. Any recommendations??

Re: Trailering Question for NYC

If you have the time, your best bet is to drive into the City, the way you would with your boat. Figure out the best route especially the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel, ez-pass/toll booth, you are going to use. This way when you do it with the boat you will be ready.
You don't want to end up in bad situation because someone makes it sound so easy.

Re: Trailering Question for NYC

Im familar with both routes. Its the trailering Im concerned with. Are these routes feasible with and Excursion and a 33ft boat?

Re: Trailering Question for NYC

I'm also familiar with it, but I'm trying to picture doing it with my trailer and truck. I would think that from Eastside to Westside, 34th Street is best, because it's straight and I see plenty of truckers doing it. What I'm not sure about is the best entrance into the Tunnel. There may be only one for Trucks, next time I'm in the City I'll try and take a look.

I would still do a practice run from starting point to end point if I had the time. It would make for a stress free ride the day of.

Re: Trailering Question for NYC

You can't go through the Holland tunnel. My trailer guy tried it with my boat and got turned around by the police. Huge hassle. Thought my boat was going to arrive at Liberty Landing at 4 PM, it got there at 10 PM!

If your on the island put in at Manhasset or Glen Cove.
15min ride to Liberty Landing.

Well, not really. At 45-50 its 30mins.

But Active, really, why trailer when you can just run it?
You are so close. I can understand if you were coming from upstate, or as far as AC, but from Jones or ER inlet, its a breeze.

Re: Trailering Question for NYC

Active - stay in the water and run. I could fill about 14 pages with reasons not to travel by land, but the route you describe has to be about the toughest to trailer in the country. Why put yourself and your investment through that? I'd pay double, and take twice as long to go a different way just to cut down on the stress of the route you describe. Shoot me a PM with your phone # if you want details.

When I ran flatbed I was 65' total length x 102" wide & ran thru the tunnels w/no problem. It all depends on what time of the day your looking to do this. Where exactly are you going to ?

When I brought the Apache home from Massachusetts, the GW was closed due to an accident.

I had to take the back way to get to the belt and over the VZ bridge. That was the most stress full trailering experience I've ever had! At one point I was at a light and had to cross over 4 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic to get to the exit.

After about 30 minutes of this crap I just started blowing thru the traffic and didn't even care that I had the boat behind me. I gave lots of hand gestures and yelled some choice words out the window! 5 1/2 hr drive from Mass turned into an 8 1/2 hr drive.

Never again!

Re: Trailering Question for NYC

I would not go into Manhattan on a dare, just asking for problems. I would do the VZ also, its not a bad ride. The Bayonne Bridge is a great short cut, I have had straight trucks on it not sure about trailers. Heres a link to the PA, they have phone numbers to the specific bridge or tunnel. I would call and ask them any questions you may have.
