Trying to make a final decision on mufflers. I'm in the wisconsin area and the DNR is strict on one of the lakes I boat on.

GGB will probably not pass the 88 db test but I could put some down turns on the ends and that might help, I like those because there are no moving parts.

North star and CMI will get me down to the db limit, but I would like to hear about reliability with the North Stars and the CMI's.

Have heard from one person that the all stainless CMI's make a clicking noise that you can hear from inside the boat along with some problems with sticking open for both the North Stars and CMI's.

To top it all off, I've heard that on Lake Winnebago if you pass the idle test this year they will make you do a drive by, which would be a problem with Nstar and Cmi.

Would just like to get some feed back from anyone that has any of the above, and if possible actual db readings that they have taken.

Just need some help making a decision here.

I got my CMI's thru Fred @ Trick installed on my 525. At first I thought too quiet but So far Im very pleased. Going up the Ct River two weeks ago with DEP ridding up my butt, no issues.....In my application I find the exhaust quite quiet even at a slow to moderate cruise.

Ron, have the Livorsi e-series(N-star) on my Nortech w/ 525's. So far I am absolutely satisfied. Quite at idle( easy to talk w/ people in the boat) and a nice note up and running! Good luck! Tracy

I've been following most of the upper midwest noise law because I currently have switchables on all three of my boats. Wisconsin changed their law to be one of the toughest in the country. The officers can use any or all of the three SAE recognized tests at their whim. J34 is the toughest of all.

NR 5 .125(1)(b) ,An officer requesting a boat operator to submit to a noise test shall test the
boat using testing methods J34a, J1970 or J2005 .
SECTION 5. NR 5 .125(3)(b) is created to read :
NR 5 .125(4) CUTOUT MECHANISMS . No person may operate a boat t hat is equipped with a
muffler cut out, by-pass switch or similar device unless the operator of the boat can demonstrate at
the time of inspection that the boat cannot operate contrary to s . 30.62(2)(b), Stats .
NR 5.125,(3)(b) Operation standard. Noise level testing procedures J34a, J1970 or J2005
of the Society of Automotive Engineers shall be adhered to by boat operators when requested to
submit to one or more of them by officers conducting noise tests on boats operating in the state of
Wisconsin .

Here is Minnesota's law. The 50 feet noise limit of 84 decibel can be enforced at full throttle.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is warning owners of boats with loud motors that the state has strict laws regulating watercraft noise, and offenders are being fined. "Every summer we get a number of calls from lakeshore owners and other water recreation enthusiasts about noisy boats, and the situation seems to be getting worse," said Tim Smalley, DNR boating safety specialist. "I guess you can't blame folks for being upset when they go to the lake for peace and quiet, and a few boaters with extremely noisy motors roar up and down the lake all day," he added.
Minnesota's watercraft noise laws state that a motorboat has to have an efficient muffling system that prevents excessive or unusual noise. and keeps the noise level below set limits. (Eighty-two decibels at 50 feet or equivalent levels at other distances for boats built after Jan 1, 1982, or 84 decibels for boats built before that date.) You may not sell or operate a boat that exceeds the noise standards or one that is equipped with cut-outs or any other device designed to increase the motorboat's noise. It is also unlawful to modify a boat to exceed the noise limits.

Here is a link to the Federal EPA report which shows some of their testing, recommendations for watercraft noise, and a map of the state laws as of 2000 (page 18). Many of the state laws have been updated to more restrictive since. One of the interesting items in the Federal report is the "Offshore" boats which are too loud, too big, and too fast for the small lakes they are operating on and their owners refusal to quiet their boats with some of the reasons being used. Believe me this isn't fun at all, but it is what is going on at the federal level and their work with the states.

Wisconsin law is currently 88 db stationary, 75 db at shoreline, and 86 db passby.

I've been trying to buy some GGB Extreme Transom mount mufflers for almost 3 months. There apparently aren't any to get. I can't wait much longer before I'm just going to have to buy something else.

we can make a custom stainless turndown with or without muffler insert, they work gauranteed, even on high hp blower motors dry or wet exhaust, we have produced themand tested, they work, wiggler
