Early 40' Cig's Raceboat ?
Any idea how many 40' Cigs.were built ? They were strictly a race version correct ? Someone had told me 6 only built with 8 wins. True or false ?
Thanks for all replies. Ken |

Here are the ones I remember:-
Bob Magoon's 40' - white with blue/red trim lines - later became UFO II - then Limit Up. Bob Nordskog's Powerboat Magazine Special. Peter Dean's Slingshot. Roger Penske's Cam 2 Motor Oil. Of course some of the above may be the same boat under differnet ownership/colours - not sure. Shall try to attach some pics. |

Thanks for all replies. Ken The firsts was "Sunoco DX" of Roger Penske and "Bounty Hunter" of Billy Martin in 1973 . "Sunoco DX" in 1974 was renamed "Cam 2 Motor Oil" and it won only one race in 1976 with Penske e Bob Magoon at the last race in offshore. http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/3...nske6qh.th.jpg "Sunoco DX" 1973 season http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/3...ke407jf.th.jpg1 http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/1...m2767zu.th.jpg "Cam 2 Motor Oil" 1974-76 Winning the Hennessy Grand Prix http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/1...t76d2fc.th.jpg "Really Ridicolous" Key West november 1976. I think it was the former "Cam 2 Motor Oil". http://img484.imageshack.us/img484/8...i77c7ig.th.jpg "Really Ridiculous" Bacardi Trophy 1977 http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/1223/race99ve.th.jpg And then "Diamond Don". I think we are in 1978. |

"Bounty Hunter" of Billy Martin in 1974.
Seven was the victories with it. Four in 1974 and Three in 1975. http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/2...rtin9xi.th.jpg http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/6...t76i4eg.th.jpg "Bewitched" Key West november 1976. Maybe this one was the former "Bounty Hunter". Then was the "US-1" of Bob Magoon in 1974 to set a new record in the Miami-New York http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/9...01645mc.th.jpg This boat was sold to the englishman Norman Barclay that re-named it "UFO 2" http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/6...19755mq.th.jpg Then was the countryman Michael Doxford that bought it to start the offshore big boat racing. Doxford re-named it "Limit Up" and he won two races in 1977. http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/7...it761sc.th.jpg 1976 http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/8...77797jm.th.jpg 1977-79 In the same year(1974) the fourth 40' was built for the australian Peter Dean named "Slingshot". Dean won four race in 1974,five in 1975 and three in 1976. Is'nt true that Dean modified the boat lenghtened to 44',as such as Crouse wrote in Searace. The 44' was a 39' design lenghtened to 44' and was a Dean 44' Special,"Slingshot". http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/3...ot778tk.th.jpg Totally the Cigarette 40' won 21 races over the world. The best years of this boat was the 1974 and 1975 with eight victories in each one. Then there was the 39'. But it is another story. |
