Seawater pump??
 

OK now that I have lost a motor due to a failed pump I have some questions.

1-Where is a good place to get new ones

2-Should I go with the ones that can run dry?

3-What keeps this thing from burning up on the initial startup each time? Is there a checkvalve that keeps the water in the pump housing all the time? My boat has the water pickups on the transom and the pump is about 3 feet from there. How does the water get to the pump for that first few seconds during engine start to keep it from frying?

My 2 cents - The pumps shouldn't starve during start up - hull pick ups or drives, doesn't matter. Generally there is a blockage somewhere (i.e. oil cooler) that is restricting the flow. I've seen many a people have to rev the engine a couple of times to make them flow - every time I find peices of old impeller stuck in a cooler somewhere.

You lost an engine due to a pump issue?? No buzzers??

That is something that I forgot to ask. Where are the warning horns and how do they work? Is there a way to test them? I didn't have anything go off. I need to fix this before putting the new motor in.

Lubrication, Dishsoap, waterbased KY, anything to get it lubed. for first start up after new install.

I ment each time that I start my boat in the water. You would think after sitting on the trailer for a week and then putting it in the water that the pump would be dry.

Call Fred at Trick, Ask for the KPM pump. Its a rebuild kit that uses the front snout of the original pump setup. Take that plastic housing off, Pee on it and toss it in the trash cause thats exactly what it is, TRASH.
once you put the KPM pumps on, You wont ever have an issue. They flow alot more water too the way the pump is designed. I always used grease on the inside of the pump housings so that on initial startup it wont burn but the KPM pumps are phenominal and wont let you down.

there are Separate senders for oil pressure and water Temp ....the oil pressure alarm sounds upon startup ....then oil pressure comes up and the horn stops ...not sure about water temp ...this is on carb motors ...I am sure the newer EFI setups are more sophisticated ....
