Re: 118 mph Formula 382

Re: 118 mph Formula 382
Previous owner of my 382 had it rigged with 950 h.p. blower motors through Bravo drives and ran 114 m.p.h. He went through 4 sets of drives in less than 75 hours.

Dry weight is #10,400 lbs, add 7 lbs/gal for fuel and #110 each for the ladies. :D |

Hoping for better luck with the BMax HT's. But from what I've seen having the front covers off, the upper gears are pretty stout. |
Re: 118 mph Formula 382
This boat has been for sale on and off for 2 plus years. I was going to buy it when I was looking, but there have been some engine issues. Blown head gasket and the motors never ran right. Some engine builder in Cali did the power, but the owner NEVER got it right. He (the builder) wanted $5k plus expenses to come onsite to set it up. I tried to make a deal with the builder to take the power back in trade and get me something a little less agressive and throw me some cash. It was my understanding that they put $120 into the power. He was also throwing in a set of XR drives with the package. Too many ifs, ands, and buts.
I backed out. Good looking boat though. Someone will enjoy it and the repair bills!! Dave |

Isn't that the boat that went to CA a couple years ago and is now painted silver?

That ad is a couple of years old???
I bought the boat then for $125,000...it did have some engine issues (a couple of fouled plugs) GT Gary Teague built the engines..they had 9 hrs (module verified) when i got it...Gary tuned them and have had no issues since (great engines)...had a shifting issue and blew one drive...waiting on quote on the new HT's from Dean. The boat has been quite a project...it's almost there It'l do a 100 pretty easy but I have not pushed it much beyond that??...but 118..that's some of that good old boy BS!! like Nort's 120/1150 pump gas crap KL |
Re: 118 mph Formula 382

Re: 118 mph Formula 382
lower...plus grenaded lower case...I am now on a shedule to replace lower bearings and inspect gears every 50 hrs.

Re: 118 mph Formula 382
What about putting some asd-7,there is another Formula with a set on and from what Rik told me the set up sounds familar to yours, blower motors. A little over 100 hours and not a problem. Jeff
BTW, that boats paint job looks awesome, very clean, very classy. |

Re: 118 mph Formula 382
Love the Formula so don't get me wrong but with that power it really should be going a lot faster. For example in the lastest Hotboat mag I saw the 382 (38') Formula went 81mph with twin Merc 600's. The same day same test the 42 Fountain with twin Merc HP525's went 84mph. The test article specs show both boats cruise at 4000rpm at about the same speed. A 42 Fountain with 600's will run 100+. What would a 38 Cigarette with 525's and 600's run? I guess around 85 with the 525's and 93 with the 600's?
I know with twin 525's the 382 Formula goes around 78mph so compare that to other 38+ foot boats. |

Re: 118 mph Formula 382
The 42 Fountain has more length than the 38 Formula. The Formula has a huge swim platform too. At the water line the Fountain is a good 3-4 feet longer.
Slow does not mean smoother ride. |

What does a '42 Fountain weigh? |

I've been in both too. I'd take the Formula on a rough day and the Fountain when it's calm. |

Re: 118 mph Formula 382
abouy the same as the formula a friend had 2 382 race set ups 525s mid 80s . road nice in the rough, thought the baja did too 36 24 degree hull.

Re: 118 mph Formula 382
Me neither, have not been in a 36 Baja. I would guess since the bottom is simple it would be easy to drive and probably pretty smooth.
Panther don't both boats have a 23 degree bottom? Yes the Fountain has a pad but with the longer nose the Fountain could cut down and span some of the rough stuff pretty good. Back in 2000 when I was an APBA inspector I was on flag duty in the Formula pace boat. It was a 382. It ran good but was a little slow with HP500's back then. 75 was about all it would do and it knocked us around pretty good at times. |

I'm not saying one is better than the other, it's just a matter of personal preference. If I wanted to take my buddies out and go fast I would take the Fountain. If I wanted to take the wife and her friends out I would take the Formula. When I'm out in my 80+ mph Apache and it it's rough I seem to catch up and run with all the 100 mph boats. :drink: |
