Default help! fell through my cabin hatch and broke it, ouch.

Cracked the cabin hatch ontop of the deck the other day while I was buffing the deck. I was going to replace the whole hatch but they are $400 from Bomar to replace. Does anyone know what type of plastic they use? Thinking of just getting a replacement plastic cover and be done with it.

High Molecular Weight(HMW) Polyethylene or Ultra HMW PE should work nicely. It's a tough, durable plastic that comes in sheets(natural color is an opaque white). I'm pretty sure that's what my Bomar hatches were made of.

Might also give Wolfs Marine a try out of Benton Harbor MI. From what Ive heard they have a scrapyard over there, may be able to pick up a used one. Their number is 269-926-1068, or www.wolfsmarine.com.

hmpe= HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT POLYETHYLENE

This ebay auction claims that Bomar hatches are acrylic.

Polyethylene plastic is characterized by toughness, near-zero moisture absorption, excellent chemical resistance, excellent electrical chemical resistance, excellent electrical insulating properties, low coefficient of friction, and ease of processing. Polyethylene plastics are classified by density and the primary differences are in rigidity, heat resistance, chemical resistance, and ability to sustain loads. In general, as density increases, hardness, heat resistance, stiffness, and resistance to permeability increase.

Crystalline melting point of the material is 267 ° F. Recommended maximum service temperature is about 200 ° F.

It very well might be. I hate the stuff, though. It's brittle and it cracks.

I was sure they were made out of plutonium, with the prices they charge for a new one, , I know a guy who knows a guy in texas who rebuilds or makes custom hatches pretty cheap,I will get his number if you are interested. Mine were cracked, so I just took out a few small fiber glass matt strips and some resin and put mine back together and sprayed them, came out reall good. so if you have to replace it anyway, give repairing it yourself a try, its fun, the fumes make you feel good for a while , and who knows you might actually like your work.
