Fountain Advise Please.
I've been shopping for a boat for a while now after going out serveral times in my friends 35 foot cafe racer (he ruied me for normal boats). I found a 33 foot fountain with twin 300hp V8 outboards. The boat is a 1988 model and looks cool but needs some TLC. It drove kinda squirlly at high speeds compared to the Cigarette that drives like its on rails. should I be concered about this? Also, I hear these motors are obsolete and I'll have trouble keeping them going. One more thing.. The boat hauled ass (65-70?) but had trouble getting out of the water. Is there anything I can do to get out of the water quicker and still maintain the top end speed?

Re: Fountain Advise Please.
I'll try to give some unbiased advice:) The 300 HP V8 outboards are rather old and obsolete. They are either Johnson or Evinrudes. They will be hard to get parts for. And you will need to be doing some kind of work on them. How much are they asking for the boat? If you get it real cheap it might be worth it. Those old Fountains are pretty well built. I would go for inboards myself. How much do you want to spend? Boats are a pretty expensive hobby. I would try and get the newest boat you can afford. Good luck in your search.

Re: Fountain Advise Please.
I'd stay away from thos V8 outboards especially that old. Hard to get parts for if you can even still get any.
Puuuuulease not more Fountain vs the world crap! Hey Cig and Outer guys, how that kilo and race winning record coming along? :evilb: :drink: |
Re: Fountain Advise Please.
Ok, hers my .o2. I like the hull but hate John, or Rude V8 ob's. And have never really been out in one but i assume its fairly heavy and rides like a dream.

Re: Fountain Advise Please.
I like Cigarette.......but they are seriously overpriced (most boats are anyways) Cig does make a great, solid boat. Older Cigs (non-step boats) take huge power to run any decent speeds, however, they are wave-crushers.
Fountains are nice and fast (the new 38 Fountain ran 115 on Merc 700's.....that is impressive :drink: ) but wouldn't be my 1st choice for rough water. The Fountains are definately fast....no denying that For me, personally out of the 2 boats, I would get the Cig if you were running in any rough water and the Fountain for speed on water that doesn't get rough. I have a 33' PP (average speed for it's size/power) and use it mostly on a lake, but I still want to be able to go ocean boating and have a solid boat for the rough water. The lake (Havasu) can't even come close to challenge the boat. |

Re: Fountain Advise Please.
I would stay clear of the old V8 300s they are trouble. My friend's boat had 3 of them on it and man carry your wrenches with you. he finally replaced them with 3 mercury 250s.

i have been told those old 300's are also EXTREMELY thirsty engines.

BTW... I love reading about people that make comparisions between Bentley & RR's and other vehicles when my guess is they've never even sat in one |
