Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
Hello everyone and how are you. I am coming up short on boat insurance. I am located in Tampa, FL and have a 1993 47 foot Fountain with twins.
So far I have tried: - Total Dollar - BoatUS.com - National Marine Underwriters My driving record is clean and they wont even quote me... seems like nobody realy wants to cover anything in Florida. What do you guys think?? Any help is appreciated. Q |
Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
Alliance Risk Managers in Ft. Lauderdale. John Campbell. He insures the OSO boats and has risen where the others have fallen. Google the number and it will come right up.

Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
Thank you very much for the information! I called over there and looks like they can get the job done. I need a recent survey... but that is it.
Still probably going to be 6 to 8K per year which seems high to me. What do you guys think? |
Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
Also try Worldwide Marine Inc. 517-333-4100 and ask for Bob Luwellen(sp?) if he's still there.

Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
Hello guys... I tried Worldwide Ins. and the cost is around 6K to 8K per year to insure the boat. That is for a 100K policy....
I just don't get it... I know that not a lot of 30 year old's are running around with a 47 foot Fountain... but come on, 8K per year????!!!!!???? I don't mind spending $500 a weekend on gas during the season... but $700 per month on boat insurance is getting a little crazy. I'm sure that a lot of you guys have the same problem. I guess that I am just tired of paying all the BS fees that come with living in Florida. Taxes are 18K / year on my house and another 6K/year to insure it (flood ins.).... the list goes on. So what are the alternate solutions????? Boat insurance is manditory in Florida, right??? or is it???... your thoughts? ....frustrated in Tampa.... Q |

Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
But would you recomend not having it?(be honest)... most of my friends here locally are pushing me to just drive it without insurance... I guess that I am on the fence.
I paid cash for the boat so I do not have a loan... and really... I would just drive it out to some local islands or "hang out spots" in the tampa bay area and/or Sarasota... nothing really offshore. I am not a hot head and never really get "into it" unless it's glass and no other boats are around. If you were in my shoes, would you just say, "to hell with the insurance"? Thanks for the help. Q |

Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
I actually live in Apollo Beach just south of Tampa... just turned 30 last week. Come to think of it, when I made all of my insurance phone calls... I was stil 29.. maybe this made a difference??
Anyway, the motors are yanked right now... I actually put it up for sale due to the insurance deal... but I'm thinking about just keeping it and not going with the insurance. I have twin Merlin blocks and will probably work the motors to 572 without a blower for now. When I get the motors in, I'll have to get in touch with you... Q |

Let me know when you are up and running again. I also live in Apollo Beach, so you can not be far from me. Do you keep the boat on a lift or on a trailer? Mike |
Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
Ah... I did not see your signature until now. That sounds great! I am building a house as we speak... When the boat is done, then I'll keep in at my house (dock behind my house) But right now it is in storage. Shoot me a PM with your phone number and I'll give you a call.

Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
Go with John Campbell at ALLIANCE,He is based in Florida and his policy has the best coverage for your area.
|
Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
if your not going to have insurance, get an umbrella policy and take the rest and put it in a money market account until you need it for repairs, etc.

Still probably going to be 6 to 8K per year which seems high to me. What do you guys think? I'm payin 8000 for a 51 OL in Jrsey no hurricanes up here to me that sounds fair. |
Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
THE 51 OL is insured for approximately $ 500,000 and the hurricanes will be in NEW JERSEY and NEW YORK SHORTLY ACCORDING to ALLSTATE INSURANCE COMPANY.
|
Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
I a musing AlState, fair results, I do not think their underwritters understand performance boats.....
|
Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
I had a deal worked out with a marine insurance co. to give all OSO members a good deal but the thread got poofed for some reason. It's to bad because members were really saving.

Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
From the sounds of your houses taxes I am going to assume you have some assets you would like to protect. You shouldnt be worried as much of the boat value but should be worried about the liability portion of your insurance. Accidents happen and you dont want to lose your savings, house, and future savings over it. An umbrella policy will not cover your boat accident if your boat is not insured, I know because I have both. Your umbrella policy will make you raise all your liability insurance on everything you own if you want them to cover you for the amount that would run over. I would look into tweaking your insurance so you could maybe just get liability and take the risk on the boat. My 2 cents.

I can relate, I remember trying to find insurance myself, what a pain in the azz. Boat Insurance is NOT mandatory in FL, though I would not be without it. The only requirments might be if you keep it at a marina or if you have a loan on the boat, the lender will require it - but not the state. I'm with Worldwide, and you've already tried them, so I can't give you any help there. Good luck. |
Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
Who Is This New Mysterious Affordable Insurance Company Or Agency ?
|
Re: Boat Insurance??? Need some direction....
I agree with BMANAFORT. You may be able to eat the cost of the boat, but you're exposing yourself to huge liability if you injure someone. An umbrella won't cover you if the boat isn't insured.
