One of my Labs has cancer
Sadie is 8 years old, started coughing yesterday.the vet says she has lymph node cancer all over, this just out of the blue. He says there is nothing he can do,he gives her 2 weeks. We asked about taking her to the Auburn,Al vet college,he said that might buy her 3-6 months but he didn't recommend it,would be too rough on her. Any OSO'ers been thru this? Any advice? She doesn't seem to be in any pain, but she is just lying around.I expected my 14 year old lab to leave first, didn't expect this.

Robert, very sorry to hear this. Had to put 2 dogs down a few years ago. The best thing is to think of your friend and not let her suffer. Do the right thing if you have to. It is hard buddy. Good luck. Tracy

Re: One of my Labs has cancer
Vet told me to come by in the AM for some medicine with a long name i can't remember,he said it was a long shot but might help so I'll try it. I've known and trusted him for 30 years, when he says it's time to let her go,Karen and I will let her go.

Re: One of my Labs has cancer
A couple years ago, I had a cancer specialist diagnose my lab with the same thing, I went thru thousands trying to keep him alive. The specialist never mentioned that it could be something else. Well it was - bone cancer. Luckily, he was never in any pain and I did gain a few months with him but to wake 1 day and have what you thought was under control kill your buddy, well it sucked.
Make the best decision for the dog, just ask the question I didn't. Best wishes.

I put down our 3 yr old Golden a few years ago after it got cancer and they wanted to start amputating legs. One vet wanted to do the amputations and medicans to gain a bit of time but I didn't want to put a formally active dog thru that. It was a sad time. I wish you good luck.

Re: One of my Labs has cancer
Yes it sucks when they get sick, when I was 28 I put down my Black Lab ( Rocky) he was 18 we grew up together, he was as much my dog as much as I was his human, we went everywhere together.
He went down hill fast in about a month. I couldn't watch him loose weight and the first day he didnt even look at a ball I tosed to him I knew it was time. Now at 35 my 9 year old who can remember Rocky wants a dog and wants a Lab but I just can't get another dog much less a Black Lab again.
